  • Surname Email The Thomas O Hanlon Memorial Award in Veterinary Medicine The Thomas O Hanlon Memorial Award in Veterinary Medicine was established in 2012 in memory of Thomas Patrick O Hanlon MVB 1969 MRCVS by his wife Ann and his family to celebrate and honour his excellence as a scholar colleague and a veterinary surgeon Tom will be remembered for his great natural inquisitiveness coupled with an innate learning ability and a continuous thirst for knowledge He had a Master of Science in European Food Regulatory Affairs and had plans to follow on with a PhD As a philanthropist he showed great kindness and practical help to his fellow man and this Award will ensure his legacy for future generations Thomas was born and raised in the parish of Horeswood where he attended National School Educated in Mount Mellary Abbey in Cappoquin Waterford he studied Veterinary Medicine at University College Dublin and graduated in 1969 He worked locally for a short time and then proceeded to take up employment with the Department of Agriculture where he continued to work until his retirement on 8th March 2010 Upon graduating Tom worked as a temporary Veterinary Inspector and worked in Donegal Kerry and Mayo where he met his wife Anne After four years Tom took up the position of Veterinary Inspector at Carlow District Vet Office and later Senior Vet Inspector for Cork Waterford and Wexford In 1998 he became the Senior Superintendent in Beef Control and covered all of Ireland from his base in Johnstown Castle in Wexford Over the course of his career he visited the USA Australia Germany UK and Egypt Tom engendered in his staff self motivation and personal development in all areas of one s work and life He had a vast knowledge of most topics and
