    directly towards student scholarships with 0 on administration and will allow students to participate fully in campus life without the worry and financial restraints of third level education The worth of these scholarships is beyond measure for these students and their families as it is a passport to a better future I had to sit down I couldn t believe that someone who had never even met me was prepared to do this amazing thing UCD scholarships benefit talented students like Maria Devlin pictured below an exceptional young woman who when offered her chosen course found herself in the unthinkable position of having to turn down her place As she says My childhood was carefree but I worked very hard at school to get to university Dad always said he d support me in any career I wanted but he was thrilled that I chose a Social Work path at UCD He loved helping others and was so happy I shared his passion Everything changed when Maria s beloved dad Michael was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2014 just as she began her final year in school and life for the Devlins quickly became smaller darker When we heard the cancer was terminal it devastated us Dad was determined I d be the first in our family to go to university Keep at it he d tell me and I really wanted to make him proud Sadly Dad passed away last summer but I kept my promise to him I was so proud to get accepted at UCD Despite Maria s hard work it seemed she d be unable to take up her place Her mother was struggling to pay the mortgage and provide for Maria s younger brothers there simply wasn t any money available for university I wasn t ready to give up I got a 2 nd part time job but I knew it wouldn t be enough The cost of rent alone in Dublin matched my wages Then I heard about UCD Champions Scholarships UCD Scholarships are lifelines for disadvantaged students They level the playing field allowing recipients to focus on college life instead of money worries They also further UCD s great ambition that ability not ability to pay shapes our student body Please will you become a UCD Champion and give 25 per month or whatever you can afford to support a UCD scholarship When I heard that I d got the scholarship I had to sit down I couldn t believe that someone who had never even met me was prepared to do this amazing thing But I am so grateful that they did and I want UCD s supporters to know I ll take this opportunity they ve given me Since starting at UCD Maria s done just that She s top of her class yet still gives her time to tutor local underprivileged children and work her part time job All our scholarship students display this same determination UCD is far
