conflict including the Prime Minister of his childhood years Margaret Thatcher I have met a couple of advisers who were very close to Thatcher and I am just fascinated by her career To have become a female world leader in 1979 is an incredible achievement and despite not necessarily agreeing with very much of her political agenda I still find her personally intriguing Like many 18 year olds he cast about for a decision on what he might do at university and decided to opt for a BSc in Social and Management Sciences at Edinburgh Napier University hoping the broad degree would give him a good basis for a career after university While at Edinburgh he always made a point of attending the lectures by Ian Wood and particularly those on Conflict in Northern Ireland I enjoyed this course as much as any other course I have ever taken at university From being an 18 year old with no experience or real interest in history I became a 22 year old with a deep interest in the subject Following graduation a spell with an insurance company came to an end when the company closed down This event gave him the impetus to re ignite his interest in the conflict in Northern Ireland and so applied for the MA in Irish Politics at Queen s University Belfast Read More He hit his stride there completing the MA and then winning a scholarship to complete a PhD in the School of Politics International Studies and Philosophy under Professor Richard English s supervision Along with Ian Wood and Richard English the other major influences on my career have been Professor Graham Walker at Queen s and Father Thomas Murphy who was the head of the history department at Seattle University who gave me my first postdoctoral employment I owe a great deal to these four individuals and their belief in me Since becoming the John Moore Newman Fellow in 2011 Andrew Sanders has been researching the legacy of the Irish American diaspora including actors and other cultural and non political organisations in helping bring about the Northern Ireland peace process The findings are expected to inform a model for other conflict resolution situations around the globe Based in the UCD Centre for War Studies Dr Sanders sees the significance of the Fellowship in the prominent platform it gives him to demonstrate that the US transnational interest in resolving the Northern Ireland conflict began in the Nixon era on the appointment of John Moore as US Ambassador to Ireland Moore was Richard Nixon s appointment and many accounts suggest that he was the very first special envoy to Ireland a role that George Mitchell would perform officially with great skill and compassion for Bill Clinton Thanks to the Newman Fellowship I have been able to illuminate the role of the United States in the Northern Irish conflict and peace process and help to move the literature on the topic away from the inaccurate generalisation
