  • Teachers of the UCD CII Attend 2015 Chinese New Year Celebration in UCD
    to hold a celebration in the UCD Global Lounge The event lasted from 11 30 am to 10 00 pm Students from China and other countries were attracted to the event by a variety of celebratory activities which included a live broadcast of the Spring Festival Gala a workshop in Chinese traditional culture Chinese movie appreciation and traditional Chinese music and dancing Chinese teachers from the UCD Confucius Institute organized the workshops in Chinese traditional culture They invited friends from other countries to join them in activities such as paper cutting painting calligraphy and cucurbit flute playing enabling them to gain a deeper insight into Chinese traditional culture After that a spectacular show including Chinese traditional dance Tai Chi and renditions of the traditional Chinese musical instruments Erhu and Zheng were performed by teachers from CII Their excellent performance won great plaudits from the audience Furthermore students had the chance to try on Traditional Chinese costumes which allowed them to experience the fun side of Chinese culture In the evening a Chinese buffet and karaoke brought this event to a climax Students from different countries sat together and enjoyed the special Spring Festival eve dinner Even though they are far from their hometowns this celebration brought these students a warm start to the Chinese New Year Xu Danfeng from the Business Institute of Renmin University of China expressed her joy to be part of this warm celebration and was proud to see that people from other countries are showing a great interest in Chinese culture Mr Wang Can the president of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in Ireland gave the opening speech which included the Irish greeting Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Daoibh Happy New Year During the event Dr Catherine McGurren the Chinese marketing director from UCD International office gave

  • Irish President Attends the 2015 Spring Festival Gala Hosted by the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland
    gathered to celebrate the Chinese New Year The Spring Festival Gala was comprised of two parts the UCD CII Chinese performance and a special guest appearance by the Beijing Red Poppy Ladies percussion band The show opened with a rendition of the classic Chinese song Love and the recent pop hit Little Apple performed by university students and students from Jesus and Mary College taught by the UCD CII For their performance of the Chinese classic Mulan the Red Poppy Ladies incorporated Chinese folk percussion music with contemporary music to put a modern twist on this legendary Chinese story The audience was impressed by the Chinese language skills of the UCD CII students and left enchanted by the story of the courageous heroine Mulan who disguised herself as a man to join the army and save her father The band s striking performance spiced up the folk story The happy evening commenced with a grand plaque awarding ceremony for UCD CII s three new Confucius Classrooms Ambassador Xu Irish Public Expenditure and Reform Minister Brendan Howlin and Deputy President of UCD Professor Mark Rogers presented the Confucius Classroom plaques to the Galway Education Centre Jesus and Mary College Goatstown and Our Lady s School Terenure The UCD Confucius Institute has now established eight Confucius Classrooms in Ireland Since its establishment in September 2006 the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland has worked hard to promote bilateral exchange and collaboration as well as mutual understanding between China and Ireland At the end of the Gala President Higgins congratulated the success of the show and had pictures taken with the performers and students The Spring Festival Gala gives Irish people the opportunity to experience the wonders of Chinese culture first hand and it is one of the Institute s best loved and most

  • The 2015 Irish Confucius Cup Go and Chinese Chess Congress
    the Irish Go Association Prof Wang Liming Director of the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland and Prof Cai Yongqiang Chinese Director of the UCD CII This year we had the participants aged between 10 and 60 and the top players coming from across the globe After a heated two day competition Mr Huang Chunlong from England won the first prize of Chinese Chess and Mr Young Sam Kim from South Korea won the title of Champion of Go The organiser also awarded contestants with prizes for participation and prizes for younger players The President of the Irish Go association Mr Rory Wales expressed his hope that the annual Confucius Cup Chinese Chess and Go Congress will attract more people to participate in these games Prof Wang Liming the director of the UCD CII stated that Chinese Chess and Go are treasures of Chinese culture It is hoped that Irish people could have deeper understanding of Chinese civilisation through learning Go and Chinese Chess In order to better promote Go and Chinese chess top professional players of the Chinese National Chinese Chess and Go teams were invited to the tournament to play simultaneous games review games and award dan certificates The Chinese Chess World Champion Mr Jiang Chuan had a spectacular 1 against 6 blindfolded simultaneous chess games Ms Hua Xueming the team leader of the Chinese National Go team spoke highly of this tournament She expressed that the magnitude and quality of the games were exceeded her expectations This event is significant in the campaign for promoting the art of Chinese traditional go and chess During the event a Chinese chess enthusiast from Finland expressed his gratefulness to the Confucius Institute for hosting this platform where he can finally play with others 10 years after he learned how to play

  • Launch of the Expert Group Overseas Chinese Teachers Training Programme by the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland
    and Ms Ni Jun from School of Languages Law and Social Science at DIT took part in the training session The main purpose of the Expert Group Overseas Chinese Teachers Training Programme is to support the training of Chinese teachers in Confucius Institutes so as to improve the teaching skills of overseas Chinese teachers Under the theme Teaching Chinese in Ireland three experts Prof Li Quan from Renmin University of China Prof Zhang Xinsheng from the University of Richmond and Prof Zheng Yanqun from the Beijing Language and Culture University gave lectures respectively on 1 Language Culture Characters Theory and Skills Localization of Chinese Teaching 2 Interface between Common European Framework of Reference for Language CEF 3 Localization of Chinese Teaching and MOC Model of Chinese Teaching in the Age of Big Data Prof Li Quan pointed out that teachers must keep a positive attitude in order to ensure success in teaching Chinese focus on teaching the Chinese language and open their minds to the possibilities for how Chinese culture may prevail Prof Zhang Xinsheng pointed out that the realization of localizing Chinese teaching is an essential phase for the internationalization of Chinese and that mainstreaming is the ultimate sign of the localization of Chinese Prof Zheng Yanqun focused her lecture on analyzing specific teaching methods and illustrated skills and strategies which are needed in teaching Chinese with multimedia and also how the improvement of technologies may motivate students to learn Chinese During the lectures teachers in the audience engaged with experts in heated yet insightful discussions The training session was emceed by Chinese Director Cai Yongqiang Director Wang Liming gave a speech to summarise the event Mr Wu Xiaochuang First Secretary for the education section of the Chinese Embassy in Ireland spoke highly of the training programme in his

  • UCD Confucius Institute organised its first Chinese Exam Winter Camp
    in this programme The Chinese Exam Winter Camp Programme 2014 aimed to organise and promote immersion Chinese learning through activities such as Chinese culture lectures and those focusing on communication between students and cultural experience to enrich the student s understanding of Chinese culture and to motivate students to learn Chinese The programme consisted of orientation Chinese classes cultural classes communicative activities cultural tours and camping On the 27th of December the Confucius Headquarters held a grand opening ceremony during which students visited and purchased books in the Textbook Exhibition on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language in the Confucius Headquarters They also took part in activities on Chinese traditional culture During the Winter Camp students not only improved their Chinese they also engaged in numerous cultural activities such as cooking dumplings face painting paper cutting martial arts classes andChinese movies In addition they also visited many tourist sites such as the Great Wallof China the Temple of Heaven the Forbidden City the Summer Palace the Chinese National Museum the China Science and Technology Museum the Birds Nest and the Beijing National Aquatics Center They also watched a Chinese Kongfu performance and went shopping in the Pearl Market and the Silk Market During the closing ceremony students took a Chinese exam organised by Hanban and also performed in a talent show Ashling Aisulu Sugrue from Sutton Park School was accredited as a Camper of Honour The Irish students performed the Cup Song for the audience and they were greatly impressed Despite the tight and tiring schedule students remained excited and enthusiastic towards Chinese language and culture at the end of the trip After 10 days of living and learning in China their Chinese greatly improved They said that the Winter Camp changed their views towards China and repainted the image

  • Volunteer Chinese Teachers from UCD CI Participate in the “Collaborative Teaching Experience Seminar” for CII
    section of the Chinese Embassy in Ireland There were about 40 participants including the directors from both Confucius Institutes as well as accredited Chinese teachers and volunteer Chinese teachers The presentations in the seminar included mock up teaching activities based on various subjects such as family members Chinese characters body parts Chinese cooking and Chinese songs Six volunteer Chinese teachers shared their teaching experiences with transition year students They presented their mock up classes with the help of teaching cards props and various multimedia which made for interactive and enjoyable classes Xia Yongbin Chinese director of the UCC CI was the MC for the seminar CaiYongqiang Chinese director of the UCD CI for Ireland and Guo Rongrong accredited Chinese teacher from the UCC CI commented on presentations made by six volunteer Chinese teachers They commented that these remarkable presentations were presented in a friendly manner with clear goals and interesting topics highly suitable for transition year students As members of a new generation of teachers they were able to focus on a specific group of target students and made the best of theircreative teaching methods which greatly inspired the audience After the presentations Chinese teachers from both Confucius Institutes participated in a discussion on various problems in their classrooms and possible solutions Volunteer Chinese teachers have become a significant part of the Chinese teaching team Experience exchanges between different Confucius Institutes are very helpful in enhancing their teaching abilities and in helping to identify more suitable teaching methods and modules for local students Moreover these exchanges also promote communication and cooperation between Confucius Institutes building an effective platform where they may work together in realizing the goal of introducing Chinese into the Irish education system Thanks for sharing About The Author Super User Close Related Articles UCD Confucius Institute organised
