  • Irish Secondary School Principals Return with Deeper Understanding from Fourth Trip to China Organised by UCD Confucius Institute
    Centre These attractions were chosen to showcase the best of both traditional and modern China On the morning of Monday the 27th of October the principals visited the headquarters of the Confucius Institute Guided by Tian Fangzhou a project official they participated in the traditional cultural activities of paper cutting Chinese calligraphy and traditional Chinese music They also took part in an interactive Q A session where they gained a better understanding of Chinese culture In the Chinese Text Book Exhibition Centre the principals were very impressed with and spoke highly of the teaching resources and textbooks designed by Hanban The Office of Chinese Language Council International On Wednesday the principals were invited to visit the high school affiliated to Renmin University During their grand tour of the campus they discussed the school s extracurricular activities with their host Following this they attended a meeting with the principal of the school Zhai Xiaoning and covered topics such as managing overseas students and teachers supporting and empowering teachers and teaching Chinese in China and overseas On Friday the Irish principals were invited to visit the No 4 High School Beijing Ma Li the dean of the School Affairs Office introduced the history and development of the school After this the principals took part in an English class where they engaged with teachers and students of the school These activities were organised so that the principals could gain a clearer picture of the differences and similarities between education in Ireland and China After the trip the Irish principals told us that the trip had given them a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and its development along with a brand new outlook on China In the future they all hope to work closely with the UCD Confucius Institute to push forward the teaching

  • First Winter Camp in China for Irish Secondary School Students Organised by UCD CII
    Great Wall and the Terra Cotta Warriors and gained a unique insight into ancient Chinese culture through their experience In the headquarters of the Confucius Institute in Beijing the students learnt paper cutting Chinese calligraphy and tried out traditional Chinese music and dress The question answer activities about Chinese culture gave students a chance to delve deeper into the teachings of Confucius and others while browsing the abundant selection of teaching materials gave students more confidence to take their Chinese learning further In RUC and the High School affiliated to BNU the students also learned some additional Chinese culture about Chinese calligraphy In the class they learnt how to use maobi traditional writing brushes to draw bamboo pictures and to write Chinese characters such as 正 人 美 爱 fully understanding the meaning of the calligraphy and painting In the Confucius class in the High School affiliated to BNU the students learned more about Chinese music listened to some performances and returned the favour by performing some Irish music After that the students chatted eagerly with a group of Irish university students studying in China to learn more about their life and studies away from home The principals of Jesus Mary College and the High School affiliated to BNU both hoped to establish a platform for students in the two countries to communicate with each other online The trip gave the Irish students a unique opportunity to leave the classroom and get face to face and hands on with Chinese language and culture Their experience greatly enhanced their interest in all things Chinese and will spur them on to greater study and involvement in the future Winter Camps such as this will further promote the communication and interaction on education between the schools in the two countries and help develop

  • 10th Anniversary of Confucius Institutes Worldwide
    Dublin Students from 40 secondary schools and colleges exhibit their learning outcomes through 20 booths which included the Chinese Zodiac Peking Opera mask painting Guzheng Chinese calligraphy and photos and stories of their real experiences in China There were also 8 performances involving folk songs Guzheng dancing Sanjuban and Kongfu The dance entitled Little Apple brought the event to a delightful climax and collected the first prize 5 more exhibitors were awarded the second and third prizes Ambassador Xu Jianguo pointed out On the 10th anniversary of the first Confucius Institute today s Confucius Institute Day provides a platform where the students will not only have a joyful day but also learn from each other s experiences and improve their knowledge of Chinese language and culture Indeed this was not only a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute worldwide but also an exhibition of the outcomes of Chinese learning in Ireland The event attracted more than 500 Irish students and friends and was a great success Apart from the exhibition and performance the UCD CII Chinese teachers also arranged various culture workshops such as Chinese calligraphy Guzheng and Hulusi instrument demonstrations Chinese knots and Chinese paper cutting The Irish students and friends were able to experience Chinese culture highlights on the spot Many parents of students said they hoped their children would have more opportunities to experience first hand Chinese culture like these The UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland established in 2006 is now working with more than 50 Irish schools in teaching Chinese language and culture Other teaching programmes include evening classes training programmes for local teachers etc The total number of registered students with the UCD CII are 5 300 each year Ambassador Xu concluded As a model Confucius Institute the UCD Confucius Institute has

  • UCD Confucius Institute organized 3rd Irish Local Teacher training in China

  • Sino-European Research Centre for Creative Economy launched in UCD
    and in the process of changing the development mode of economy creative economy is the inevitable approach Ambassador Xu said that it is absolutely the right time for UCD Confucius Institute and China Creative Economy Research Institute to found Sino European Research Centre for Creative Economy and that the study of it is far from enough to meet the demand of practice He hoped that the Research Centre could make the best use of the industrial and resource advantages of Ireland and Europe increase the research capability of creative economy serve and cooperate with industries between China and Ireland and between China and Europe The Chinese Embassy in Ireland will provide support and assistance whenever needed Professor Liming Wang Director of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland welcomed the establishment of the Centre and said the European Commission has total budget of 445 million for the Culture Sub programmes from 2014 to 2020 under Creative Europe 2014 2020 and 38 million for 2015 to reinforce the cultural and creative sectors capacity to operate transnationally and internationally Therefore the establishment of the Research Centre is not only timely but also historically significant in building the bridge in creative sectors between Europe and China The keynote speaker at the Inaugural International Conference on Creative Economics is Professor Tiejun Wang from Beijing who founded China Creative Economy School According to Professor Wang Professor John Hawkins from the United Kingdom first proposed the concept of creative industry in 1997 and since then the theoretical framework for creative economics has not been completely established yet Professor Tiejun Wang proposed a theoretical framework for creative economics in 2012 and thereafter founded and set up China Creative Economy Research Institute and China Creative Economy School to promote research on creative economics especially its theoretical framework learning application and

  • 2014 Joint Conference of New Confucius Institutes in Europe Held in UCD
    ceremony of the conference and delivered the keynote speech In his speech HE Mr Liu Yunshan pointed out that the Confucius Institute is a bridge of cultural exchanges He expressed his wish that the Confucius Institutes will become a high speed railway connecting the dreams of China the dreams of every country and the dreams of the world HE Mr Liu Yunshan also stated in his speech that there were 455 Confucius Institutes and 680 Confucius Classrooms in 121 countries all over the world He emphasised that language was a carrier of culture a tool for people to communicate with each other and a bridge for different cultures to connect It is for the Confucius Institutes to fulfill this mission HE Mr Liu Yunshan gave UCD CII 1000 Chinese textbooks and invited 100 students from UCD CII to join the summer camp of the Chinese Bridge Competition in order to support UCD CII to promote Chinese language and culture in Ireland Group photo with all the delegates of the 2014 Joint Conference of New Confucius Institutes in Europe Mr Ruairi Quinn Minister for Education and Skills Madam Xu Lin Director General of Hanban and Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters Prof Chen Yulu president of Renmin University of China and Prof Andrew Deeks president of UCD also attended the event Prof Liming Wang the director of UCD CII hosted the opening ceremony UCD CII also organised some performances at the Opening Ceremony There was folk music performed by the National Dance Company of Ireland beautiful singing by the students from the Confucius Classroom at Jesus and Mary College Goatstown and a Chinese rap by the UCD Confucius Institute Students impressing the audience with their beautiful music and perfect Chinese Mr Ruairi Quinn presented the Confucius Medal to Madam Xu

  • Liu Yunshan Attends the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony for the Model Confucius Building of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland
