vast Although you might operate in a limited area one s experience is important for everybody It is difficult for me to think of going to a region I don t know I don t believe in colonial architecture and I don t like colonising from the point of view of culture The traditions of an architect s birthplace are very important e g bell tower in Como to tower house in Ticino When I say I turned my back it was not on the village it is on the speculative building of later years I like village architecture When new building turns the fabric of building into opportunism it is time to say enough so that is why I say no Architect of Today Regarding existing historic buildings there are many preconceptions Many architects are afraid of history because it is possible that history can be used to cut away the foundations of new thought and new architecture If you approach the problem honestly you must have courage to express yourself in the materials and the dialect of the day The dialect position is two values in opposition to each other which results in a third the result of the building An honest response to today s problems is courageous architects must not hide behind forms of yesterday humiliating every new concept of today Architecture can play two parts it can continue the existing process and assist in the process of destruction or it can say at a certain point no and can try and make a better thing I work in the second theme If I build a building I am giving a value to the people who use it the spaces serve nothing but people Houses Architecture is not an instrument for building in a place but in that place The house transforms the hill just as the hill transforms the house The found fact in architecture is not the most important thing it is the significance which these forms once they are made take There are several modes of thinking saying the same thing I do what I do because I can t do anything else Everyone has their own language Just like a painter it is absurd to do one picture in the mode and another in that mode It isn t that formal a system people tend to do the same things because they are never quite right I have learnt this I started with a house with a hole in it In the next house The hole went inside like a womb the same thing developed The forms are analogous because the settings are the same with the same bricks and the same light If it had happened that things had been different it would have changed The house with the arch came near to being constructed but the client had a row with his wife Everyone expected me and I thought myself that I would construct the house at the top of
