    1935 1935 1934 1934 1933 1933 1930 1930 1929 1929 1927 1927 1924 1924 1923 1923 1920 1920 1917 1917 1911 1911 1909 1909 Loading December 1968 Protest Irish Press Sit in students make proposals Earlsfort Terrace The Irish Press Irish Press Monday 2nd December 1968 SIT IN STUDENTS MAKE PROPOSALS Students who organised the 30 hour demonstration at the U C D School of Architecture from Friday afternoon to Saturday night have issued short and long term proposals for the rise in educational standards in the school Copies of the statements are being sent to Dr J J Hogan president of U C D Prof T Murphy registrar Prof J J Morrissey Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Prof D Fitzgerald professor of Architecture the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland and to the Royal Institute of British Architects They have also prepared a dossier on what they believe to be the faults in their school They believe that they are in danger of losing recognition from the R I B A COMMITTEE As regards short term plans for reform the seven man action committee of the architectural students have agreen unanimously that a committee be set up immediately with equal staff and student membership staff representation to be adequately representative of all categories and that its decisions be effective in the School of Architecture As regards long term reform the students agree that it is difficult to define in specific terms what training should be given for each type of work in the profession because of the general nature of the name Architect They suggest two approaches to the problem either to produce an individual capable of acting effectively in a number of fields as yet unspecified or to devise a process whereby as fields of

    they plan to leave the building Their occupation is to draw attention to what they consider is a fall in standards in the school At a press conference earlier in the day a spokesman for the student said The students of the school are convinced that their course has fallen far below acceptable standards The school is in grave danger of losing its professional recognition by the Royal Institute of British Architects He added that efforts to communicate their feeling to the relevant authorities on this subject had over two years been consistently ignored The students feel that radical changes are needed to bring their archtiectural standards up to internationally acceptable levels Sleeping bags blankets rugs extra clothes and supplies of food and beverages were brought to the studio and adjoining premises throughout the afternoon In all there are 180 students registered as architects who could have taken part and the organisers expressed satisfaction at the response The sit in is specifically confined to students of architecture strict marshalling identification checking and security which at times extended to suspicion of the press were observed At about 4 30 p m the Dean of the Faculty Professor J J Morrissey addressed the students The press were not allowed into the meeting Professor Morrissey said afterwards that he had appealed to the students to call off their sit in I told them that we were conscious of the fears about R I B A recognition and that everything possible would be done to protect it I have no plans to address them again at the moment At 8 p m the students were joined by a panel of speakers which included staff members and Dublin city architects The speakers included Mr Dermot O Connell Mr Brian Jackson and Mr Jim Fehily of
