they don t have a normal shape Platelets only live for a short time about 10 days but they are constantly made so there is always enough ready to jump into action when you need them Platelets are on the look out all the time not just when you have a cut They are at work all the time to make sure that your blood cells don t leak out through your capillaries Apart from being very sticky platelets have other things that help them to make a clot They have chemicals that call out to other platelets to make sure they make a big enough clot and other chemicals to make sure the clot doesn t break up The mineral calcium vitamin K and a protein called fibrinogen also help the platelets to make a good clot so your skin can heal When the platelets reach the cut on your skin they mix with the fibrinogen and begin to break up Little threads called fibrin are made and these make a web like a spider s web that has gaps so tiny your other blood cells cannot get out and the bleeding stops When the web dries it goes hard and your skin heals underneath When your skin is totally healed the scab falls off Sometimes you get a blood clot inside that you can t see These can happen in blood vessel in older people and be very serious because they stop the blood flowing properly If you have a bad knock or bang against something hard your body can get a bruise which you will see as a black or blue or dark red mark on your skin This is a clot under that you can watch heal the colour will change to a yellow green colour

hand can hang around on anything you touch If they aren t cleaned away the next person to touch that thing can pick them up and get sick That thing could be a door handle or it could be food The best way to avoid passing on microbes is to wash your hands all over very often You really need to do this every time you use the toilet prepare or eat food sneeze or cough touch something dirty or play with your pets You can get really sick really quick if you don t wash your hands It is no use washing and not changing your clothes especially your socks and underwear Bacteria especially love your socks and shoes so make sure that you keep them very clean change your socks every day If your shoes do get smelly try leaving them outside not in the rain so that the sweat in your shoes dries completely When your sweat dries completely the bacteria will have nothing to survive on so the bacteria should die and you ll get rid of the smell If this doesn t work three are lots of products in the supermarket that might help Your clothes will get dirty as well just through every day activities Make sure to keep your clothes clean especially your sports gear learn how to use the washing machine ask an adult and wash and change your clothes as often as you need to Hygiene doesn t just mean that you keep yourself clean you need to keep your environment clean too You need to make sure all the cooking and eating utensils in your kitchen are very clean that your bathroom is always clean and that you don t leave food or drinks lying around your living and sleeping

of the microbes and they also produce antibodies to help destroy them You can easily tell if your body is fighting a big invasion your glands swell up because they are working so hard The white blood cells in your blood are the main defenders inside your body they are cells of your immune response White blood cells are also called leukocytes like our friend Luke O Cyte They find and fight any invaders that manage to get through your first line of defence You would have a pretty difficult time staying healthy without your leukocytes Your leukocytes are made in your bone marrow and come in lots of different types Some of the most important types are Lymphocytes these come in two different types B cells and T cells B cells make antibodies see below T cells find invaders that might be hiding in the cells of your body or find cells that are not healthy and destroy them before they make you sick Macrophages these are the biggest blood cells in your body They patrol different parts of your body and clean up any invaders or damaged cells they find They are phagocytic cells that gobble up and dissolve away the invaders or damaged cells Neutrophils these patrol your body finding and destroying invaders One type of leukocyte has a job that is vital to your health your Bcells make antibodies Antibodies are proteins in your blood that travel around fighting microbes Each antibody is unique it only recognises it s the one microbe it can fight but they are really important in keeping you healthy When your body sees a microbe for the first time it does all it can to fight it Sometimes you don t notice that a microbe has invaded other times you may get a little sick but when you recover you have antibodies against that microbe in your body If that microbe tries to invade your body again the antibodies are ready and waiting They remember how to fight the microbe and quickly destroy it Your body will pull out all the stops and will even make more antibodies all to make sure you don t feel sick Your body is invaded by microbes thousands of times each day but the antibodies of your immune system protect you as much as they can If you have antibodies for a particular microbe it means that you are immune to that microbe and won t get the disease it causes Your body makes antibodies if you have been sick with a disease or if you have been vaccinated When you are vaccinated against a particular microbe the doctor will give you a tiny piece of that microbe that is dead or has had the dangerous part removed so that is safe It is enough microbe to make sure your immune system would recognise it if it saw it again but not so much that you will get sick Your body makes antibodies to the

a desert the air can be very dry but if you are in a swamp in a hot climate the air can have a lot of moisture and feel very uncomfortable One of the big problems in humid weather is that when you sweat it cannot evaporate to cool you down there is too much moisture in the air already Everyone knows that humans can t breathe under water but what about fish If you look closely at fish swimming you will see little bubbles rises to the surface of the water The fish is breathing and it is breathing oxygen But you know that if a fish is taken out of water it will suffocate because it cannot take in enough oxygen from the air Fish had adapted so that they can take the oxygen they need to breathe through their gills Oxygen dissolved in the water is taken in through the fish s gills concentrated and picked up by the blood The blood flows in the opposite direction to the water flowing over the gills to make sure the most oxygen possible is picked up by the gills The blood carries the oxygen around the fish s body where it is used by the fish s cells The oxygen in the air that surrounds the earth isn t equal for example there is less oxygen in the air at the top of high mountains The higher you move up from the ground this is called altitude the thinner the air becomes The pressure in the air is less the higher up you go and so there is less oxygen Mountain climbers who climb the very tallest mountains like Mt Everest need to bring canisters of oxygen with them because there is very little in the air by the

in your stomach is very strong and quite dangerous but your stomach has protection so it isn t damaged by it When the food and acid mixture chyme travels from your stomach to your small intestine it can put your small intestine in danger Luckily bile from your liver mixes with the chyme to stop the acids working and protects the small intestine from acid burns Clever There are two main parts to your small intestine the jejunum is in the middle of your small intestine and is where lots of chemicals called enzymes help to break down the food from your stomach into even smaller pieces Your small intestine has even more help to break down the chyme so that you can absorb its nutrients Enzymes from your pancreas help your body to digest fats and proteins from your food The bile from your live that stops acids from your stomach harming your small intestine is stored in your gallbladder until you need it All through your small intestine everything works together as a team to make the whole system work Your ileum is the longest part of your small intestine and it joins your small intestine to your large intestine It is filled what look like lots of tiny folds called villi Imagine a folded piece of paper If you unfold it you can see more of its surface These villi act in exactly the same way the tiny folds mean there is more surface on your intestine for nutrients to be absorbed If your small intestine was just a smooth pipe the food would pass through too quickly for it to absorb all of the nutrients Strong muscles in your small intestine push the food along As it moves past your villi they make sure that every
