  • PRINGLE WELCOMES CJEU COURT DATE – Thomas Pringle TD
today the Independent TD for Donegal South West stated I welcome the decision of the CJEU to use the accelerated procedure available to it to allow for an oral hearing in October This shows that the Court recognises the urgency of this matter and its upmost importance to all EU states involved including Ireland In his action Mr Pringle has questioned the compatibility of the ESM Treaty with existing EU Treaty provisions He has also questioned the lawfulness of a related amendment to the EU Treaties The Supreme Court having heard Mr Pringle s case in July referred the following questions to the CJEU 1 Is the ESM Treaty compatible with the EU Treaties 2 Is the related decision by heads of government to amend the EU Treaties legally valid 3 Can the ESM come into operation before the EU Treaty amendment comes into force 1st January 2013 at earliest The questions that have been referred to the CJEU are key to establishing the legality of the ESM which commits Ireland to potential payments of up to 11 billion to a fund being set up to protect the financial system added Pringle We have seen how there is a new legal challenge being taken in Germany on the ESM This is another example of the continuing and growing scepticism of this fund across Europe and Ireland and I look forward to the outcome of the oral hearing in Luxembourg It s high time that we brought democracy and transparency to Europe the fight s not over yet stated Pringle Be Sociable Share Previous Story PRINGLE CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO END ITS ATTACK ON THE VULNERABLE Next Story PRINGLE CONDEMNS CLOSURE OF GYNAELCOLOGY WARD AT LGH About admin Contact Info Killybegs Constituency Office Connolly House Bridge Street Killybegs Co Donegal 074

  • PRINGLE CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO END ITS ATTACK ON THE VULNERABLE – Thomas Pringle TD
Additionally the top 10 of the population receive almost 14 times more disposable income than the poorest 10 There is something profoundly wrong in that It wasn t so long ago that this Government was promising to break away from the old and begin a new politics Reform transparency and fairness were the talk of the day We all know how that worked out The extravagant pay rates for special advisers are constantly breaching the pay cap cuts to social welfare payments and indirect taxes have ravaged the country and jobs are as sparse as they ever were while more and more people are being forced to emigrate to make a life where a living can be made We also have a situation where as a result of the reduced rate of social welfare payments young people who are made homeless are left trapped in emergency accommodation because they cannot receive the assistance they need to make a life for themselves This could be easily resolved and addressing this would actually reduce the cost to the State This is yet another group which is being failed by this Government as a result of its attack on the vulnerable added Pringle It s clear from this that the Government are making very questionable decisions that result in such a lop sided distribution of wealth with so many people struggling just to make ends meet We have the fourth lowest tax take as a percentage of GDP in the EU Increasing this would do much to address the inequity we now face in our society There is also a great need to equality proof the budget to assess the impact it would have on society s most vulnerable and ensure that these people are protected Changing the ratio of spending cuts to

  • ‘Why are the Government favouring the Banks’ asks Pringle – Thomas Pringle TD
introduction of a Basic Payment Account has decided in their wisdom to favour the pilot of basic accounts through those reliable and well oiled machines the banks In effect it would seem that for the 17 of people who do not have a bank account these people are being corralled into the banks and the State ignores the tried and trusted and in situ system that is the post office network The Department of Social Protection intends to move to 100 electronic payments for social welfare benefits and implement this strategy with the banks But what the Government fails to see is that people don t trust the banks The Post Office is a trusted part of our communities and can implement the basic account in a way that will provide the easiest access for everyone and continue to allow people to get their payments in their local Post Office Post Offices provide significant social fabric put simply the Post Office is the perfect way to roll out this account This would also help to ensure the continued operation of many rural post offices by growing the services that they can provide This is something that achieved a high level of financial inclusion in Brazil when the Post Offices there won the tender and it continues to be a success added Pringle The Tánaiste claims that there is already progress in rolling out these accounts to Post Offices yet none appear to be involved in the pilot programme Not only would the inclusion of post offices provide cost savings it would help maintain the jobs of the 3 000 people that work in our post offices and provide people with a trustworthy reliable service It is vital that Post Offices are included in the rollout of the Basic Payment Account

  • PRINGLE CALLS FOR FISHING BAN TO BE RELAXED ON DONEGAL ISLANDS – Thomas Pringle TD
Joint Committee on Agriculture Food and the Marine of which I am a member called for the fair treatment of small island communities respect for fishermen as custodians of our fisheries and the sea They also asked for the responsibility and right to practice traditional livelihoods that are ecologically sustainable socially just and culturally diverse and pass down our traditions knowledge and skills to future generations This comes on foot of the Donegal Islands Survival Plan a three year survival plan for Donegal islands to tackle the mass unemployment emigration and loss of heritage that these islands are now facing If an agreement could be made to relax the ban on salmon fishing it would then be possible for Arranmore to be linked with other European and International small islands sharing experiences strategies and visions for resilient communities and ecosystems From there it could be ensured that the marine ecosystem is in balance and that activity is within the ecosystems regenerative capacity The case of the fishing ban in Castlemaine Co Kerry and the subsequent reopening of the harbour for commercial fishing is living proof of this Arranmore which is of a similar size to Castlemaine would be very likely to reap similar benefits if such changes were to be implemented there having a considerable positive impact on the local industry and community alike I have been a strong advocate of the Donegal Islands Fishermen and have over the last number of months been making numerous representations to Minister Coveney and Minister O Dowd over the seriousness of the situation and the potential for growth As it stands Arranmore has lost 800 000 from its annual economy and there have been many business closures and mass emigration from the island We cannot allow this to continue added Pringle I would

  • PRINGLE CALLS FOR NO FURTHER CUTS TO DISABILITY SERVICES – Thomas Pringle TD
on to provide this service have also affected their ability to operate effectively As I speak we are awaiting the publication of the long overdue Value for Money Review on Disability Services Yet it s plain for all to see that continuing to provide people with disabilities with a Personal Assistant is much more cost effective than any alternative 64 billion is the amount the Irish Government committed Ireland to paying in order to bail out the banks 64 billion would provide 306 million personal assistance hours for people with disabilities this equates to financing the largest personal assistance provider in Ireland for more than 150 years Many of the people who rely on this service have already had their allocated hours reduced which has already limited their quality of life Any further cuts could leave many housebound or worse be put in a situation where the only option is institutionalisation It is very disheartening that the Taoiseach will not make a commitment to introduce no further cuts to this service yet he has no problem in granting hefty allowances to public officials for clothing and the like This shows once again just how much this Government is out of touch with the people added Pringle If we are to treat these people with the dignity and respect they deserve as Irish citizens then there must be no further cuts to the personal assistance service The ratification on the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities must also be prioritised in this regard There are people across the country that are fearful of where their futures lie or if they even have a future These people deserve better than the lip service that this Government has provided This State of Fear whereby the most vulnerable in our society
