    that racism plays no part in our future The creative competition is a great channel for young people to use their creativity and passion to tackle a serious issue that they feel strongly on I have been thoroughly impressed by the artwork poems songs and dances that I ve witnessed today I d like to applaud all who have taken part especially those who have travelled a significant distance to be here Ciaran Kilkenny In addition to Minister O Ríordáin a number of well known sports personalities were present at today s event St Patrick s Athletics player Conan Byrne Longford Town striker Don Cowan and former pro boxer Oisín Fagan were amongst those who participated in a panel discussion on racism chaired by sports presenter Darragh Maloney Eleanor Mallon of Antrim Ladies Gaelic football and camogie was also in attendance along with over 500 young people from schools and youth services around the country Dublin senior footballer Ciaran Kilkenny the Gaelic Players Association ambassador for Show Racism the Red Card took time to commend all the schools who took part I d like to congratulate the thousands of young students from all over Ireland who participated in the Creative Competition The entries are a tribute to the work of Show Racism the Red Card and the many teachers who are working tirelessly to promote social inclusion and tackle racist abuse in all its forms through education The standard of entry reveals the levels of social awareness amongst young people and how the anti racism message is being conveyed strongly through our schools which is very encouraging As a sportsman I m delighted to be involved today and to assist in the ongoing work of Show Racism the Red Card particularly harnessing sport as a vehicle to promote respect both on the field and in society in general Work submitted by schools and youth services can be viewed on youtube com theredcardire The list of main prize winners from the event was as follows Overall award St Tiernan s Community School Dublin 6 this song is just an example of part of their work https www youtube com watch v IzU707npBhA Primary school category Caherline National School Co Limerick https www youtube com watch v eDfosxhlkDI Second level category Douglas Community School Co Cork https www youtube com watch v jMIYK ZPt9M Youth group category Involve Youth Service https www youtube com watch v biRVB 7EEew Elaine O Sullivan a teacher in Maria Immaculata Community College Dunmanway also received a special award from the Minister for her dedication to eliminating racism Ms O Sullivan has entered the competition with her class group for the past four years and last year won the second level category award Further information about Show Racism the Red Card and its creative competition is available at www theredcard ie ENDS About Show Racism the Red Card Show Racism the Red Card is an anti racism charity which was founded in the UK in 1995 with

  • Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental is International Person of the Year 2014 | Show Racism The Red Card

  • Football Against Racism Europe (grassroots scheme) | Show Racism The Red Card
    players in that vital few minutes before kick off Most clubs now have the Show Racism the Red Card signs and other signage and these are on display permenantly at the grounds Clubs were also supplied with arm bands and other resources by Brendan The Kerry Schoolboys Girls League is delighted to support FARE Week and other initiatives to stamp out this unacceptable behaviour Laytown Bettystown Youthreach On Tuesday 14 th of October all students in Laytown Bettystown Youthreach participated in a Show Racism the Red Card workshop delivered by SPHE teacher and resource person Nicola Townley During these classes all students explored education packs given to us by the Show Racism the Red Card organisation Worksheets and resources from the Show Racism the Red Card website were also used During this time students explored what is racism and discussed the different reasons why people might act racist the consequences it can have and ways that racism can be overcome Students were really engaged in the discussion that developed and helped them to gain an insight into the effects of racism and gave them a sense of empowerment to be able to change people views on racism During the workshop students also learnt about the organisation itself and the different sports organisations that are involved All students took part in taking photographs holding Show Racism the Red Card signs as well as photographs of them supporting FARE by wearing the Show Racism the Red Card wristbands On the 21 st of October students were involved in a Show Racism the Red Card themed football tournament in support of FARE All students participating wore their Show Racism the Red Card wristbands and took photographs holding the organisations posters which were then put on display throughout the centre Photos from the day were sent to local newspapers and posted on the centres Facebook page Overall the events were extremely successful and all students and staff involved were proud to be participating in supporting the FARE fortnight and the Show Racism the Red Card organisation as well as helping to promote the anti racism message Mahon Youth Project Mahon Youth Development Project held an in house soccer match for 20 young people from the Project In total 4 nationalities were represented within that number Players of the match were award to players from both teams After the match players and friends went back to the Youth Cafe for food and each person was presented with their wrist bands The Cafe are was decorated with paper flags from around the world The group really enjoyed the evant and have asked that we do the smae in the February 2015 Mid term break Manor Astro We advertised the event locally and via social media We involved the local comprehensive school and had ty students to assist in our soccer blitz We began with a small warm up game called treasure chest we instigated a scenario were racism might occur and showed how racism can occur
