  • Show Racism The Red Card | Ms. Brennan's 6th class
in Ireland and in other countries around the world As part of our ethos we encourage the importance of promoting anti racism in our school community and country As a result the students had a lot of background information regarding this topic and various figures who have played a major role in the fight against racism like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela The pack allowed and encouraged the children to examine and explore racism within the world of sport When watching the video the children were amazed to see footage from soccer matches they have seen and listen to players who they admire and respect speaking about the effect of racism on them and their fellow players The lessons and the creative competition was an excellent stimulus for the children to express their views on racism in both Ireland and the rest of the world As teachers we felt that the pack was a very easy to use resource It incorporated many lessons and exercises which embraced various aspects of the curriculum this aided cohesive and integrated classroom planning We decided as teachers that we would encourage the children to create their own individual projects to promote the message show racism the red card Altogether there were 50 children were involved Some of the children work in groups of two and three while the rest worked on individual projects The children in our classes particularly enjoy art as a subject so the majority decided to create posters The children were given both time at home and in school to create their posters videos and written work and they really enjoyed working on these projects When the projects were completed the children were very excited and interested to see what their classmates had created This project was very well done

the cheetahs manager The crowd said horrible things to Frank like à   Go back to where you came fromà   but Frank just ignored and then he shot and he scored the crowd started booing him Then he was playing on the wing and Jack ran over to Frank and pushed him to the floor and said à   Go back to Africaà   which wasnà   t very nice but in the end the Sharks were the champions BY Marcus Ryan Black Or White Shouldnà   t make us fight Were all the same All in the same frame Black or white Ità   s just not right Come on lets go And make them know Racism is bad It makes us mad Letà   s go and showà   yo Shouldnà   t make us fight Were all the same All in the same frame Black or white Ità   s just not right We gotta make it stop Make it drop Stamp it down Snap it out Just make it stop By Sam Kingston Ryan 4th Class Racism Song Racisms not cool Ità   s just not for school Please be decent Donà   t be racist Cause when the generations go Your relations will follow Racism is bad It just makes people sad This is a good fact So donà   t be like a mouse and cat No matter the weather Letà   s treat everyone better So respect everyone Where ever their from And this is the racism song By Gift Amaeze 4th Class Racism in the world Racism is unpopular and horrible writes Craig Morrow and in my opinion anyone who doesnà   t give a job to someone who is black should be given a jail sentence and a five figure fine But racism against black people is not the only kind of racism in the world Different religion Jew Catholic etc different nationality or language Spanish French etc or even being a stereotype is believed to be racist Like all Americans are fat and eat crisps all day or Mexicans all have sombreros and eat paella and tapas all day But a big surprise is black people being racist to white people Ità   s rare but isnà   t a lie An African country Tanzania has albinos who are mocked hurt and God forbid even killed because they are white It is something that many people are working on trying to stop racism and they are succeeding in my opinion But thatà   s just my opinion Racism in sport is something rare these days and not as frequent back twenty years ago If you are a different colour religion or nationality it shouldnà   t make a difference in sport Ità   s talent that counts not your beliefs race of nationality Ià   m extremely

very well for their first attempt and each puit forward good ideas and took on board the message of the DVD which i feel is evident in their finished product Picture 1 was completed by Stiofan Hoynes and 17 year old trainee in the centre His idea was to show Ireland as a multi cultural country that should try and make all nationalities and beliefs welcome I think this is potrayed well with the use of different nationalities flags Picture 2 was completed was completed by Andrew Walker also a 17 year old trainee in the centre He has a passion for car and mechanics and wanted to use this medium to potray his message that we should not let racism go into the red and get out of control As with the animation workshop the DVD was used as starting point for these projects and then it was discussed in depth with the trainees Their views and opinions were discussed and then thery were invited to come up with ideas for the projects All in all the activity was benefical to those that took part and i would say that Lifford YouthReacgh will more than likely have enteries in

with the brief Students worked in groups of 3 and 4 They engaged with the project by firstly brainstorming ideas following this process they storyboarded their plans to paper Individual groups decided on the direction they would take and further to this visualised these concepts through the medium of photography As the TY group are a very diverse group of both international and native students they engaged with process with enthusiasm Some groups used their bodies to create letters to spell out words Other groups used their hands in a symbolic way to express emotions and feelings related to racism The idea of the red card was also central to many of the groupâ s concepts Attached are some of the photos taken by students and some of their photos used together as displays for the school library The project was very well received in the class and has a lot of relevance in our school which has a good mix of international and native students The project helped to further highlight the issues around racism especially in the classroom and outside the school walls ï Our Sponsors Sign up to join our newsletter indicates required Email Address Home About
