  • Maeve Binchy, See Change Ambassador RIP | SeeChange | The National Mental Health Stigma Reduction Partnership
all that good Not in terms of talking about Mental Health certainly We just didnt talk about it If someone amongst family friends or relations had a nervous breakdown a depression or anything involving psychiatric care the rule was simple it must never be mentioned The kind and correct thing to do was to make no reference or comment or enquiry about them whatsoever So generations had to cope with the loneliness exclusion and an undeserved sense of a great divide in the world They were the people who suffered from their nerves so alienated from the rest of the world that they could never be mentioned Today s world is not perfect but unlike the Good Old Days it has at least come to accept that we all walk a fragile line and can easily need care for the mind and spirit as for the body I welcome warmly a way of life that means I don t have to turn my head away from mental illness as we did when I was young I can discuss a friend s depression with her a neighbour s panic attack a colleague s early dementia in the same way we re able to talk about appendicitis or gall bladders We can get it wrong of course be too sympathetic or sound uncaring give too much advice or too little But at least the doors are open It s no longer a shadowy world which must be ignored and denied It s a world into which we could easily all step And the great news is that we can step out of it again as a huge number of people do everyday And more will continue to do so just as long as society will include them as long as those Good

can suffer from a high incidence of stress and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in producing this resource The Minister continued As Minister of State with responsibility for mental health my vision is to achieve a change in Irish social attitudes and behaviour and to reduce the level of discrimination and prejudice Initiatives such as this have the potential to change attitudes and help lay the necessary foundations for a real and positive transformation of how mental illness is perceived Minister Simon Coveney added I am delighted to be associated with the launch of this excellent resource on farm stress and our attitudes to mental stress While we appreciate the normal stress that is part of our daily life there are many issues today which threaten its balance There is no doubt that we are now dealing with more pressures like issues relating to finance family or even the harsh weather conditions that plagued us within the last twelve months Sometimes the worries or concerns become too hard to manage and that is where resources like this one being launched today are essential Too often we hide these concerns allowing them to fester into what is perceived to be an unmanageable situation However by opening up to somebody early and sharing one s experience a resolution which may have seemed to be impossible for the person concerned can be found I would encourage all to promote this resource to encourage anybody in need to avail of it John Saunders Director of See Change said Recognising and addressing the pressures and anxieties shared by the farming community is one way to create open discussion of the mental health problems that can affect any of us Research commissioned by See Change on Public Attitudes Towards Mental Health Problems identified that
