  • Who was Frank Elliott
    born on 14 th August 1920 in Fearagh Townland Kilmeane Co Roscommon a son called Francis Bracknagh where Francis is listed as living in Newspaper articles is an area within Fearagh townland There are several cottages close together some still remain today Francis Elliott s death certificate records his death as having taken place on the night of 3 rd 4 th March and he is described as an Ex Soldier and Labourer His age is given as 35 and the cause of death is given as gunshot wounds instantaneous The informant was a certificate received from the Military Court of Enquiry held on 5 th March The death was registered on the 31 st March 1921 The Roscommon Journal and Western reported of Saturday 2 nd April 1921 states A Military Enquiry held at Roscommon into the death of Francis Elliott an Ex Soldier of Brackna sic returned a verdict of wilful murder against a person or persons unknown The evidence showed that deceased was brought from his house by disguised men on March 3 rd and the following morning his body was found on the road bearing several bullet wounds and a card in his pocket with the words Spies Beware The Roscommon Journal and Western Reporter reports on Saturday 30 th April 1921 edition The awards at Roscommon Quarter Sessions County Court Judge Wakely awarded Hannah Elliott Corry sic for the murder of her husband Francis Elliott 2 600 No further information is given although other Quarter Session cases where reported in more detail Hannah Elliott remarried on the 7 th November 1924 in Knockcroghery Church Her husband was James Dunican Hannah s address is given as Breackna sic Knockcroghery and James was from the Townland of Cloonaddra which is next to Moher James would have been

    in 2009 A meetings was held on 2nd February 2009 T he sixth AGM of St John s Parish Heritage Group was held in St John s Community Centre on 23rd March 2009 The officers elected were President Donald Feeley Chairman Ciaran Egan Vice Chairman Paddy Kilduff Secretary Marian Gavagan Asst Secretary Michael Connaughton Treasurer Liam Byrne Asst Treasurer Margaret Egan PRO Richard Collins A meeting was held on 1st April 2009 On 17th April 2009 Jack Kilcline a founder member of the Group its first Asst Treasurer noted local historian and Journal contributor was buried after Requiem Mass in St John s Catholic Cemetery May he rest in peace Meetings were held on 6th May 3rd June 8th July 5th and 19th August During Heritage Week 2009 the Group put on a Display of Historical Documents on 22nd and 23rd August and held a walk in Rindoon on 29th August Meetings were held on 9th September 14th October 6th November 2009 A report on achievements in 2009 was published in the newspapers in December see Press Release here T he following events were undertaken in 2010 Meetings were held on 1st 15th February 2010 T he seventh AGM of St John s Parish Heritage Group was held in St John s Community Centre on 1st March 2010 The officers elected were President Donald Feeley Chairman Ciaran Egan Vice Chairman Paddy Kilduff Secretary Marian Gavagan Asst Secretary Michael Connaughton Treasurer Liam Byrne Asst Treasurer Margaret Egan PRO Diane Dunnigan Richard Collins was appointed Cemeteries officer Meetings were held on 12th April and 10th May 2010 On 30th April the Group participated in the Roscommon Lamb Festival 2010 by providing two guided walks on the Rindoon Loop Walk On 21st May The Fr Seam Kelly Memorial Lecture was held in St John s Community Centre The speaker was Dr Kieran O Conor and his talk was on the important Medieval Castle site at Rindoon Meetings were held on 14th June 5 July 9 August 6 September 6 October and 3 November 2010 Heritage Week was celebrated on 22 August with a Fancy Dress Event at Rindoon The day was a great success and won the inaugural Community Award from The Heritage Council Meetings were held on 6 September 6 October and 3 November 2010 T he following events were undertaken in 2011 Meetings were held on 19 January and 2nd February 2011 On 14 January 2011 Roscommon County Council awarded the Group a Civic Reception in honour of it s Heritage Week success see right hand panel opposite On 9th February St John s Parish Heritage Group was presented with it s Heritage Council Award for Heritage Week at a ceremony in Kilkenny The Chairman Ciaran Egan and Richard Collins represented the Group see right hand panel opposite In February 2011 the meeting room at St John s Community Centre was painted and floored and is now available for use by the Group On 2nd March a talk was given by

  • 2009 Projects in St. John's.
    Blackwood and an archaeologist David Sweetman have been employed on both sites with also much assistance from the Conservation Officer Katriona Byrne and Heritage Officer Nollaig Feeney both of Roscommon County Council It is hoped to continue stabilization work on another tower and the windmill in 2010 This project is a shining example of what can be accomplished through the co operation of the local community heritage group and Roscommon County Council with much work on both sides states Katriona Byrne Conservation Officer Roscommon County Council It is no doubt the national significance of the site and the best practice approach taken to the works and the presentation of the site that has enabled us to attract the degree of funding we have and I hope that this increases into the future Tower 3 before and after stabilization T he Rinn Dúin Heritage and Habitat Walk A National Looped Walk of approximately 4 5 kilometers will shortly be opened around the shores of Rinn Dúin as soon as flood repair work is carried out to two walkways The walk has been made possible by Fáilte Ireland who has provided map boards waymarkers metal stiles and technical assistance from their Trails Adviser With finance from local sponsorship and help from J J Craven P J Grady Pat Griffin Sam Wark Alan Diffly Shane Diffly Michael Diffly and Patsy Kilcline Pat Haggart from the Rural Development Team the route of the walk was cleared metal stiles installed three stone stiles built and waymarkers placed along the length of the walk which will pass by all the major archaeological sites of Rinn Dúin This will include the hospital and the Roman Catholic and Protestant cemeteries town wall castle windmill bee bole and parish church Rinn Dúin Wood one of the best preserved medieval
