  • Sports - Rathnure NS
    Sports MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO a healthy mind is in a healthy body We see sport and physical education as a very important part of our school life here in Rathnure NS We engage in a lot of sport both competitive and recreational We enter the Rackard League and Mini 7 s competitions and have fun sports days during the year Our School takes part in a cycling initiatiove each year in the last term This aims to develop the basic skills required to ride a bike The main areas of skill in cycling are pedalling balance breaking and cornering During the summer months we encourage our older pupiils to cycle to school We haver erected signs like this around the area to ask motorists to be mindful of cyclists on the road The children must wear helmets and high visibility jackets when cycling to school We have a strong tradition of GAA in our parish and this is very evident through the young up and coming players who play on our school teams In recent years we have experienced huge success in both hurling and football competitions We are now taking part in the hurling 365 initiative which promotes and supports the coming together of our club and school to provide weekly coaching to children Hurling 365 will recommence this spring The most important thing about sport is that it is simply good fun We have lots of fun at our sports day each year when we enjoy alternative activities like egg and spoon races sack races and three leged races We also encourage parents and grandparents to come along and join in our fun We really enjoyed having the Senior All Ireland Camogie Champions come visit us in our school We love getting the oportunity to meet

    musical activities and believe that being able to sing a song or play a tune is a great way to build confidence and is no extra load to carry Our pupils enjoy a range of activities in our school to develop and enhance their musical abilities For a number of years the senior pupils in our school travelled to the RDS in Dublin to participate in the Halleliua concert They enjoyed the opportunity to sing with pupils from schools all over the country In 2013 the senior classes took part in Peace Proms Peace Proms is a musical and cultural celebration and provides a unique platform for young people to showcase their talent while promoting peace unity and tolerance through music The aim of this choral programme is to entertain educate and engage children and young people in music and to enrich their lives through exceptional musical experiences and performances and by providing a stimulating music programme that nurtures and advances their musical social and cultural development In October 2013 the senior classes travelled to the Spiegel Tent in Wexford town as part of the Wexford Opera Fringe Festival They joined other schools in singing along with famed singer John Spillane In November 15 our senior classes performed in the Wexford Opera House in front of a packed auditorium with other schools from Co Wexford in the Sing Out Loud Concert Our senior classes sing in the school choir under the leadership of Taragh Nolan They often sing at school assemblies and religious ceremonies in the Church They particularly enjoy singing at our First Holy Communion and Confirmation ceremonies They love enhancing these occasions and are a musical delight to all who hear them Our teachers Taragh Nolan and Lisa Wheelock offer music lessons to our pupils after school one

    and critical thinking and refines cognitive and creative skills Our students enjoy experiencing the art curriculum in our school and have been very successful in various projects and competitions In 2012 1st class took part in an exciting new project in conjunctin with the Crafts Council of Ireland called CRAFTed Based on developing good collaborative practice between crafts people and teachers it focuses on how craft design skills supports integrated learning methodologies with an emphasis on underpinning numeracy and literacy skills The CRAFTed programme supports teachers in the delivery of the Visual Arts VA curriculum and investigates how craft processes can contribute to learning in other subject areas such as Social Environmental and Scientific Education SESE curriculum Over the years pupils from our school have been successful in art competitions organised by local and national organisations such as Byrne s World of Wonder and the Credit Union Every year our school particiaptes in the Wexford County Council Christmas Recycling Decoration Competition This competition allows the children to really let their imagonations take over and get creative with old junk It is amazing what can be done with egg cartons plastic bottles and toilet roll inserts amongst other things Recently we
