    I C T Information Communications Technology The use of computers in education Effective use of I C T across the curriculum is a key aim for us here in Rathnure N S ICT can bring enormous benefits to the class From an educational aspect the use of computers brings a dynamism to lessons putting pupils more in control of their learning permitting independent progress and development ICT can be an incredible tool for every single subject With the effective use of computers pupils are entering a lesson with positive attitudes and the learning potential is already increased The interactive nature of our whiteboards and iPads allows pupils to become more involved permitting effective and active learning Each of our classrooms is geared towards a positive learning environment using computers There are Desktop Computers in each classroom along with Interactice Whiteboards We also have a set of iPads in the school Ipads Our ipads are loaded with education specific apps that provide a multi sensory learning environment for our pupils The pupils love using these and they definitely aid child centered learning Interactive whiteboards are an effective way to interact with digital content and multimedia in a multi person learning environment In Rathnure NS we understand that student engagement is crucial to learning and as a growing collection of international research proves interactive whiteboards promote student engagement Educators can use digital resources while maintaining dynamic interaction with the entire class provide computer based learning without isolating students and encourage a higher level of student interaction in both teacher directed and group based exchanges Today we have become a society that has become heavily dependent on technology to function at work at home and in other areas of our lives The result of an increasing technological demand is that computers and other

    is empty lights are switched off computers are not running and that the Interactive Whiteboards and the visualisers are powered off To conserve heat we always keep the doors closed and keep the thermostats at 18 degrees Our Green Code Sprinklers baths dripping taps too All waste water so what should we do Turn off the taps take showers too Use the green button when flushing the loo These are the ways we save the life giving stuff So save it share it there will be enough In 2013 an Energy Cabin visited our school The Energy Cabin was developed under the County Wexford Renewable Energy Strategic Committee It was designed and built by a diary farmer in Adamstown County Wexford The energy cabin has a wind turbine solar panel and water tank photovoltaic solar panel 2 12v batteries invertor and 240v extension cable energy meters solar oven and hydrogen kit car We had the cabin in our school for a week and the children got a chance to explore it in full They learned lots of things about renewable energy technologies It helped raise the awareness of the potential that renewable energy technologies offer us The pupils gained a greater understanding of how renewable energy technoligies work and this will stimulate an interest in renewable energy technologies We have our own composting bin in school where we put our compostable waste We can put pencil shavings fruit cores and teabags in the compost bin to make lovely compost for our flower beds We keep our school environment clean and healthy by planting plants and bulbs We have slogan competitions and art competitions in school to promote and highlight the great work we do in order to be a Green School We all work hard to earn our Green Flags

  • Health Promoting Schools - Rathnure NS
    after all aspects of their health physical mental and emotional This initative encompasses our entire school community pupils parents and staff We recently built a PolyTunnel in our school which has been a fantastic resource for us We have grown our own fruit and veg in school such as carrots strawberries tomatoes and lettuce which has promoted healthy eating If anyone in the community has green fingers and think they would like to help us please contact us We need all the help we can get To coincide with this we have also given a healty eating booklet to each family to help us all stay healthy We launched our Health Promoting Schools Initiative in September 2012 with a fun filled activity day for our pupils On 24th April 2015 we raised our Health Promoting Schools Flag and as we were the first school in the South East to do this we even made front page healines in the local newspaper We celebrated this great achievemnet with Zumba Dancing classes Flag raising healthy treats for pupils and parents and a disco in the hall We had a fantastic day and would like to thank everyone who helped to make it all happen We have a healthy eating policy in our school Pupils are allowed to bring in one treat to eat as part of their lunch on Fridays Every other day of the week the children must eat healthy wholesome lunches Fresh Today is a local business which delivers fresh healthy and locally produced lunches to our children each day All children recieve these lunches through Deis funding provided by the Department of Education Switch Off Get Active Each year in the first term the pupils complete the Switch Off Get Active challenge Everyone is encouraged to switch off the

    very early age Research has shown that children who are introduced to reading at a young age demonstrate better learning skills and are more prepared to learn when they begin their formal education in primary school A love of reading at an early age is one of the best investments in future school success Even if your child is already well into his or her schooling reading at home helps to develop vocabulary improve spelling skills and increase reading proficiency Learning to read opens the mind of a young child to an incredible world of knowledge and imagination and helps them develop creativity and thinking skills As a parent if you want your child to start enjoying the learning process it s imperative to get your child reading early even if sometimes that isn t the easiest task Here in Rathnure NS we engage in a number of initiatives to promote reading in our school Have a look at some of the activities we do in addition to regular in class literacy lessons Reading Recovery is an effective early literacy intervention designed to significantly reduce the number of children with literacy difficulties in schools It is aimed at children who have had about one year schooling senior infants and who are having the most difficulty with learning to read and write This programme is based on one to one intervention and there is an individual programme for each child The children engage in 30 minutes of intensive teaching each day and this is supplementary to classroom teaching Literacy Lift Off is an intensive in class programme of Reading and Writing which gives the pupils lots of opportunities to read books at their own level of competency It gradually lifts the complexity of what they can do in both reading and
