  • In Search of Investment Returns in a Low Growth Environment
as jobs are replaced by software and robots in developing economies excessive indebtedness of key sectors across the world It seems the world is trapped in a spiral of low growth in economic activity employment and productivity Across much of Europe the number of people of working age is dropping while the numbers of those in older age groups are rising In Germany Europe s economic powerhouse almost every age group below the age of 55 is falling Germany is aging rapidly The dependency ratio a measure of how many young people are required to support the old is one of the highest in the world and goes some way to explaining why Germans are saving quite so much over time Demographics alone suggest a low growth low inflation trend is likely to persist in the medium term as older workers tend to be less productive seek less credit start fewer businesses They also buy fewer homes cars and other durable goods What does the current environment mean for your savings and investments Is it all doom and gloom Not a bit of it The first thing to remember is that markets are forward looking They seek the highest reward And right now in a world awash with cheap cash from the largest central banks for the moment and with inflation at record lows the highest returns are in real estate investment commodities and high risk technology investment Think about it if robots and software will reduce the need for manufacturing jobs over time the companies producing those robots and the software used will earn large returns UK money manager Toby Nangle suggests that the loss of bargaining power by workers in the developed world is one very compelling reason why interest rates are so low and expected to remain low into the future with asset markets booming as a result This means that equity and commodity markets should see large increases in activity as long as worker s power to affect economic growth wanes even more in the face of persistent technological change With bargaining power of labour still falling at least until 2020 or so the smart move is to bet on asset markets rising even further fuelled by massive central bank backed cash which we are told by ECB President Mario Draghi will persist for quite some time Mr Angle very cleverly ties the evolution of asset market returns to changes in income distributions across the developed world Because the rich have ever more than the poor they will receive the lion s share of any gains coming in the future as well For investors this means capital gains are the way to go in terms of wealth creation We seem more and more to be living in a world where the allocation of financial capital is the only route to real wealth and prosperity The alternative play it safe approach is to leave your money in savings schemes earning just enough to beat inflation Sure you

  • Jennifer Maguire’s Tips for RaboDirect Tour De Picnic
I ve done some great training in the past two weeks I ve trained myself in various pubs around Dublin because the picnic can be tough on your liver The cycle is a piece of cake But really over the past couple of months I ve been getting back in the saddle and training for my annual trip to the Picnic on the RaboDirect Tour de Picnic raising funds for The Irish Youth Foundation Special Olympics Ireland and the ISPCC This year I m feeling the pressure more than ever as my 2FM co host Keith Walsh is taking to the road for the 80km trip down to Stradbally Hall this September 4th and although the trip isn t timed I m still keen to pip him to the post and get to Electric Picnic before him girl power and all With just two weeks to go I plan on getting a 60km spin in this weekend so if anyone spots me walking into work on Monday morning looking like John Wayne you know why in advance I ve been getting all my mates and family involved in helping me fundraise for such great causes and I m actually really excited about getting on the bike as it s my first official cycle since having Florence 2FM s Jennifer Maguire and Keith Walsh at the launch of RaboDirect Tour De Picnic The views expressed in any article published on the RaboDirect Blog are the personal views of the author and not necessarily the views of RaboDirect Tweet Previous post Meet the Man behind RaboDirect Tour de Picnic Back to Blog Post comment Name Please fill in your name Email address For verification only it will not be published Please fill in your email address Please fill in a valid email
