    with the everyday ecclesiastical and administrative life of the church the papers contain important records detailing relations between the Diocese and the British and Irish governments as well as the Vatican over the course of this period Given the prominence of the Catholic Church in the religious social and political life of the country its archives contain much essential information for anyone studying the major events of modern Irish history including Catholic Emancipation the Great Famine the Land War Home Rule the War of Independence and the creation of the Northern Ireland state The collection also contains the Parish Archives of the Archdiocese The papers of several former Archbishops of Armagh and Primates of All Ireland are held in the archive These include Dr Reilly 1787 1818 Dr Curtis 1819 32 Dr Kelly 1828 35 Dr Crolly 1835 49 Cardinal Cullen 1849 52 Dr Dixon 1852 66 Dr Keiran 1866 69 Dr McGettigan 1870 87 Cardinal Logue 1887 1924 Cardinal D alton 1946 63 Cardinal O Donnell 1924 27 Cadinal MacRory 1928 45 Other church records relate to the day to day business of individual parishes within the archdiocese as well as communication between the archdiocese and Rome See also

    GAA from 1917 to 1975 These are important not merely for sporting history for they also provide an insight into northern Irish nationalist perspectives through the early years of partition Alongside these are minutes of GAA Central Council meetings and national congresses from as far back as the 1930s Equally the collection contains many other GAA minute books from which precious information on the history of local sport and society may be gleaned those of the Armagh County Board from 1933 to the 2000s those of the Tyrone County Board from 1926 onwards a minute book of Armagh Harps club from 1904 various minutes books of the Brian Oges Gaelic Football and Hurling Club Cookstown from 1907 onwards and miscellaneous records and items of correspondence from counties Down Monaghan and Cavan over the decades Another special feature of the CÓFLA Gaelic games collection is the large archive of old match programmes which includes All Ireland and Ulster championship final souvenirs right back to the early 1940s These are complemented by an extensive set of Gaelic games periodicals and numerous scanned photographs of GAA related material Other Sports The focus on road bowls in the CÓFLA collection reflects the long and unique history of this sport in the surrounding Armagh Tyrone area Among the items of memorabilia relating to this game to be found in the library are the minute books of An Ból Chumann Ard Mhacha from the 1960s and 1970s and various books programmes photographs and trophies On a wider sporting front there is a wealth of additional material The library holds bound minute books of the Youth and Sports Council for Northern Ireland for 1962 65 its inaugural triennial period and 1968 71 which are not available in any other public archive From these records one may obtain

    significant body has also been translated into English Much of the latter relates to the early seventeenth century and to the period before and immediately following the flight into exile of the Ulster Earls in 1607 A large proportion of the military items relate to the service of Irish soldiers The Wild Geese in the armies of France and Spain These include military campaigns in Italy and in Mexico in the eighteenth century There is a significant body of material relating to the O Neills in Spain after the Flight of the Earls and on the fate of Hugh O Neill second Earl of Tyrone before his death in Rome in 1616 There is also a significant body of material on the St Patrick s Battalion which was drawn directly from Ireland and which fought in defence of the Papal States in the 1860s Approximately 1 200 Irishmen enlisted to fight for Pope Pius IX against the forces of Cavour and Garibaldi during their campaign for Italian unification Details of many of these can be found in the Irish Overseas archive Elements from the Fleming family in Spain In addition the collection provides a unique genealogical source for those of Irish decent across Europe Many of the records have been arranged according to family name and contain a vast array of wills legal papers pension records and correspondence Furthermore many of these documents record marriages or deaths in various European countries at time when few records survive for Ireland The collection also contains several pieces of research carried out using these archival sources The Irish colleges on the continent provided a strong religious link between Ireland and Europe from the seventeenth century They also provided the opportunity to publish books and in particular religious items in the Irish language The

  • Tomás Ó Fiaich | O' Fiaich Library
    ordained into the priesthood on 6 July 1948 A noted scholar in the Irish language and with a profound interest in folk lore and history he joined the teaching staff of St Patrick s College Maynooth in 1953 where from 1959 until 1974 he was professor of modern history He became vice president of Maynooth in 1970 and in 1974 was made president of the college In spite of his academic background he was appointed to the vacant archbishopric of Armagh and the Primacy of all Ireland in August 1977 and was raised to cardinal just two years later During his primacy he held a high profile in Irish public life on both sides of the border He welcomed Pope John Paul II to Ireland in 1979 and continued to follow his deep interest in Irish and local history He became a key figure also in the political life of Northern Ireland as the Troubles continued to unfold Tomás Ó Fiaich died suddenly at the age of 66 whilst leading a diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes in May 1990 He is buried in the grounds of St Patrick s Roman Catholic Cathedral in Armagh See also Background Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich
