  • The 34th Annual Meeting of the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) | National Cancer Registry Ireland
    Association of Cancer Registries IACR Board today 17 09 2012 formally opened the leading world cancer conference on cancer epidemiology taking place in Cork this week The theme of the 2012 meeting is Better cancer control through better information This event is being hosted by the National Cancer Registry Ireland and includes a full scientific programme covering all aspects of cancer from prevention to treatment to aftercare and survivorship Over 300 delegates from around the world are attending The keynote speaker Dr David Forman from the International Agency for Research on Cancer France spoke of the challenges facing cancer control planning worldwide The data available from cancer registries provide a geographic and temporal picture of cancer worldwide for the second half of the 20th century and are widely recognised as the definitive source for both cancer research and cancer control planning Dr Linda Sharp from the National Cancer Registry Ireland spoke about differences in cancer risk between urban and rural populations in Ireland and Nicola Bowtell from the South West Public Health Observatory in the UK described the socio economic factors associated with skin cancer and the implications for indoor and outdoor workers Among other speakers Maria Stella de Sabata from the International Agency for Research on Cancer spoke about the global initiative for cancer registry development in low and middle income countries Dr Marianna de Camargo Cancela from the Irish National Cancer Registry described how area of residence and marital status determine how likely Irish women are to have the HER2 breast cancer test and Joannie Lortet Tieluent told the audience that melanoma risk continues to rise in most countries Cancer control programmes are now making increasing use of evidence from registries to inform their decisions on the provision of services across the entire spectrum of cancer care from
