  • 23.10.2015 Launch of Cost of MS report strengthens the case for investing in neurological care in Ireland - New Web Site
MS but in terms of other neurological conditions in Ireland and along with the Cost of Stroke report points to the need to improve the management of neurological conditions within the health services to concentrate on a rehabilitative approach The Cost of MS report provides a strong evidence base for the importance of keeping people with MS as well as possible and directing health resources to the prevention of relapses an estimated 10 m could be saved within the Irish economy if relapses could be prevented and savings from delayed disability of up to 19m The report also highlights the importance of measures to keep people in employment the figures of people with MS having to give up work because of their illness are stark 27 of respondents Quality of life was one third lower than that reported for a sample of the general Irish population from a previous research study The findings that over a third had been treated for depression and 27 for anxiety highlight the impact of living with MS on the individual and their mental wellbeing There are a number of key important perspectives which NAI takes from this report which apply accross the population of Irish people living with neurological conditions 1 The need to invest in services which keep people with neurological conditions as well as possible for as long as possible and prevent and delay the onset of disability Investment in neurorehabilitation services is critical in this regard 2 The need for supports and services which address the mental health needs of people with neurological conditions 3 The need for specific measures to support people with neurological conditions in employment 4 The overall impact of living with a neurological condition on the individual and their family with a telling section on informal care
