  • 4.7.2014 Frontline Services Completely Axed from State funding scheme - New Web Site
    organisations include MS Ireland Muscular Dystrophy Ireland the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association the Migraine Association of Ireland the Huntington s Disease Association Chronic Pain Ireland ABI Ireland the Alzheimer Society and Irish Heart Foundation Stroke Action Said NAI chairman Chris Macey The effective targeting of a sector serving people already suffering immense hardship due to sustained service cuts and historical unmet need has been a massive shock And on the face of it the failure by those controlling this scheme to give any prior warning about cutting neurological services out appears gratuitously callous Failure by the State to find alternative forms of funding for these programmes and to ensure the survival of the NAI would represent an effective abandonment of people with neurological conditions The NAI which has played a crucial role in developing national clinical care programmes in stroke epilepsy rehabilitation medicine and neurology which are having a huge lifesaving and quality of life saving impact will have to cease operations unless new funding can be found The impact on neurological charities and their service users is also profound The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association has had to end its frontline Visitor Programme MS Ireland will lose its information advocacy and research officer The Alzheimer Society of Ireland will not be able to put in place vital early intervention services for people with dementia Chronic Pain Ireland will cease operations in less than 12 months The Migraine Association will lose one third of its staff Muscular Dystrophy Ireland s frontline facilities manager post cannot now be filled The Huntington s Disease Association is being forced to end direct frontline services such as counselling equipment and carer meetings due to loss of core funding support Irish Heart Foundation Stroke Action s community stroke support activities will be severely curtailed
