    Academic Council Governing Body Useful Information Academic Calendar Freedom Of Information Reports Procedures Plans Useful Links Vacancies LIT STAFF Search the staff directory CONTACT US Contact Details LIT Moylish Park Limerick Ireland Phone 353 61 293000 Fax 353 61 293001 Email Information lit ie News LIT News Item IRELAND S FIRST LARGE GOTHIC CONFERENCE AND FESTIVAL News LIMERICK SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN LIT AND MARY IMMACULATE COLLEGE HOST IRELAND S FIRST LARGE GOTHIC CONFERENCE AND FESTIVAL From October 22nd to 25th Limerick National City of Culture 2014 will be alive with events celebrating its dark side when it hosts Ireland s first large Gothic conference and festival Locating The Gothic came about when Tracy Fahey Head of Fine Art and Postgraduate Studies Limerick School of Art and Design LIT and Maria Beville Lecturer Mary Immaculate College UL first met aptly at a Studies in Gothic Fiction conference in San Diego in 2012 Both were fascinated by the idea of relating their own research in Gothic studies to the historic cultural and idiosyncratic location of Limerick city where they both live and work In devising this event they aim to take the idea of the Gothic through academic conference discussions and out into the wider community of Limerick City tapping into the city s native traditions of storytelling and folklore and its rich history of literature and art Locating the Gothic is an international academic conference which runs alongside a series of interlinked cultural events that explore the concept of Gothic locations The conference features an interdisciplinary range of papers on the Gothic spanning across areas such as literature film TV fine art geography theatre multimedia and gaming It will also host four international keynote speakers including Tabish Khair speaking on the Gothic and colonialism Monica Germana who will talk about London s Whitechapel Iain Biggs to discuss the psychogeography of mapping and Lorna Piatti Farnell speaking on the American tradition of Southern Gothic These keynote lectures are open to all students of MIC and LSAD Maria Beville says We ve had an overwhelming response to our call for papers both nationally and internationally and we are looking forward to welcoming delegates from the US the UK South Africa Australia New Zealand Mexico and from all across Europe The conference has attracted leading figures in the field of Gothic studies and will lead to exciting publishing plans in the near future The Locating the Gothic conference and festival in October will not only initiate important discussions of the relevance of the Gothic to place and to contemporary culture it will celebrate Limerick itself as a Gothic location at this important time of Halloween in the local calendar With its fascinating bloody and Gothic mix of history literature art and folklore Maria and Tracy believe that Limerick enlivens the Gothic imagination with native narratives that encompass tales of battles and sieges river monsters ghosts cannibalism and a long standing city curse In initiating these celebrations the Limerick based team that they

    Environment Laboratory for Life Science CELLS at the Institute Photo shows Professor Gary Stutte left with Adam Shinners LIT post graduate student with the experiment payload that docked on the International Space Station A panel of independent and scientifically qualified judges based at Space Florida the State s spaceport authority and aerospace economic development organization chose the LIT project among only a handful of other shortlisted universities such as Stanford and Florida IT After a number of postponements the mission which is sponsored by sponsored by Space Florida and Nanoracks finally got lift off from the Kennedy Space Centre Florida on Sunday at 1 52a m EDT 5 52a m GMT We are very optimistic about this experiment as it will tell us much about the operating limits of the biological process which could lead to extremely valuable applications both in space and back here on earth said Professor Stutte This is new frontier research at its best as it is essentially trying to explore ways of assisting humankind We could be advancing the building of space farms of the future arising from this research There is already red lettuce up there growing and my thumb print is on that so this is looking at the value of a naturally occurring fertilizer for crops It may well also arrive at some extremely positive findings with regard to advancing farming in extreme conditions on earth Said LIT President Dr Maria Hinfelaar Being the first Irish institution to be the lead investigator in an experiment to the ISS is a huge honour for LIT and is a great accolade for the exciting work taking place on the Institute s research programme in the Sciences Having our research fly to the ISS and being able to partner and mix with organisations in this area such as CSS Dynamac which was the collaborator on the project and provided significant support in the run up to launch NanoRacks NASA and Space Florida puts us in elite company After its 28 days on board the ISS the payload will be returned to the capsule which will un berth and make its way back to earth landing in the Pacific Ocean before being brought back to NASA and then returned to LIT for analysis The rocket took 36 hours to reach the ISS which is located 216 miles above the earth and was travelling at 42 000mph The ISS itself operates at speeds of approximately 17 225 MPH faster than an AK47 bullet and including its large solar arrays spans the area of a standard American football pitch and weighs 924 739lbs The mission happens in a busy week for space exploration with the Maven probe finally entering in orbit around Mars completing a journey that lasted nearly a year and covered 442 million miles The success follows the historic achievement by LIT in 2011 when one of its post graduates Gerard Newsham had his research programme carried on board the last ever NASA space shuttle mission
