    353 61 293000 Fax 353 61 293001 Email Information lit ie News LIT News Item Games Fleadh 2015 News Games Fleadh Showcases Irish Gaming Industry Leading gaming experts including Head of EA to participate in LIT Microsoft Ireland event Some of the biggest names in the gaming industry will gather at the Limerick Institute of Technology LIT campus in Thurles later this month to participate in Games Fleadh 2015 an all island games design and development competition for third level students LIT Tipperary whose alumni have worked on some of gaming s biggest titles including Call of Duty StarCraft and Guitar Hero has announced it will host Ireland s largest gaming event on Wednesday March 11th Picture LIT Thurles students Mark Nemec The Joker James Walsh The Doctor John O Bruachaill Deadpool Barry Mullane Marty McFly and Shane Hayes Twoface pictured outside LIT Thurles Supported by Microsoft Ireland EA Games and the Irish Computer Society the 12th annual Games Fleadh will feature the Direct X Endless Runner challenge Robocode and the Game Studio Endless Runner competition the winners and runners up of which will present their games to Brenda and John Romero and the University of California Santa Cruz UCSC Greenlight Committee Brenda and John Romero have each more than 30 years experience working in the gaming industry over 150 game titles such as DOOM and Quake to their credit dozens of awards and have collectively founded nine game companies Brenda will join us via an online video link from California for the event to give the keynote talk Picture Students of LIT s Game Design and Development degree course pictured at LIT Thurles Games Fleadh will also feature games development and research talks by industry veterans such as Bryan Neider who will assist in the judging process for the various under graduate competitions Neider is Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Electronic Arts EA labels which collectively are responsible for producing some of the bestselling video game titles of all time including The Sims FIFA Battlefield and Madden NFL This is a fantastic opportunity for students to create a prototype game meet people from industry and make a name for themselves within the Irish game sector said Dr Liam Noonan Lecturer at LIT s Game Design and Development degree in Thurles at the launch of Games Fleadh 2015 In terms of career development participating in this competition is invaluable as students are adding to their portfolio of creative content and networking with students from other colleges and people from the games industry It is these up and coming game developers and their innovative ideas that will act as the catalyst for job creation in the Irish game development sector added Dr Noonan According to Dr Noonan We were delighted and privileged to work with the Fulbright U S Specialist Award scholar Brenda Romero and her husband John back in September in our Thurles campus and they were very supportive of our Games Fleadh initiative They suggested

    staff directory CONTACT US Contact Details LIT Moylish Park Limerick Ireland Phone 353 61 293000 Fax 353 61 293001 Email Information lit ie News LIT News Item LIMERICK STUDENT CROWNED TOP STUDENT CHEF IN IRELAND News LIT student Jill stirs up a culinary treat to claim Knorr Student Chef of the Year An LIT student has stirred up a real culinary success after being crowned KNORR Student Chef of the Year 2015 after a thrilling cook off hosted by Belfast Metropolitan College at its state of the art Titantic Quarter Campus Jill Holmes who graduated with a BA in Computer Systems and a Masters in Interactive Media before returning to LIT to study Culinary Arts in 2013 not alone had to overcome a challenging theme set out by KNORR but also had to fight off the challenge of 14 other rising stars to claim the top prize She will now travel to Copenhagen which is the driving force behind the Nordic food movement for a trip that centres on a dining experience at Noma which was voted Best Restaurant in the World by Restaurant Magazine in four of the last five years along with a bespoke workshop hosted by the Nordic Food Lab Celebrating its 18th year in 2015 KNORR Student Chef of the Year the most celebrated student chef competition is open to catering colleges institutes of technology and training centres across the island of Ireland Said a delighted Jill The course is fantastic and I have learned so much from the lecturers who teach there especially my lecturer Jim O Meara who prepared me for the competition He was integral to my success in the competition and was so generous with his time and expertise I will finish the course this May after which I hope to start my PhD in September which will be based on a restaurant of the future combining my two passions in life food and technology Dr Catriona Murphy Head of Food Tourism at LIT said Jill is an excellent student and promises to be a top class chef and the department is very proud of her Her hard work and determination really paid off and I want to acknowledge the consistent support and commitment of lecturers in helping Jill achieve this wonderful award Food provenance and sustainability were the orders of the day at the competition with the student chef finalists challenged with creating a vegetarian starter and Irish beef main course The judging panel led by Unilever Food Solutions Executive Chef Mark McCarthy with top chef and restaurateur Mark Sargeant and chef lecturer at Belfast Met Thomas Turley were looking for the student that was best able to showcase local ingredients and produce while also successfully marrying strong food waste management techniques and an appreciation of the new allergen legislation Jill wowed the judging panel with her starter Beet and Cheese which consisted of whipped goats cheese hazelnut granola coriander pickled vegetables and goats milk paper Jill followed this with her
