    had even made up some sample gifts to show the group Lee Liam and Maeve wow the dragons with their personalised mugs and glasses 4th to pitch to the dragons were Séamus Ciarán and Emmet Their idea of a Winter Bundle which would consist of bags with turf logs and kindling was a great idea but special guest Ray Lennihan of Bord na Móna appeared slightly concerned about the extra competition Emmet Séámus and Ciarán pitching their idea The 5th group in to the Dragon s lair were Cora Lee Marcella Emily and Megan The girls product Lumo Umo was a real hit with the dragons The girls had come up with a fantastic idea of customising children and adults clothing and footwear with high visibility material which would enhance safety when out and about in Winter Lumo Umo High Visibility clothing was a great hit with the judges but they felt that the product would need more time than was allowed to complete Last but not least Molly Lila Ann and Sarah presented their idea of Christmas Candles or coinneals Their slogan was Keep Calm and Light and Coinneal which went down very well in the hall They had also brought in some sample products for the dragons to look at Keep Calm and Light a Coinneal At the end of the presentation the dragons gave their feedback and Ray Lennihan complimented the students on the amount of work and effort that they had put into the project It was then down to the class themselves to vote on which group s idea would be turned into a mini company The children voted in favour of the Christmas Candles and the pressure is now on to create and sell their product so Keep Calm everybody and please buy a Coinneal This year Dragon s Den will be coming to Kilberry N S in the form of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme The programme helps participating pupils to develop a number of skills including literacy writing presentation drawing technology research skills numeracy financial consumer awareness storytelling listening skills creative thinking problem solving team building and collaboration skills This is the first year the senior classes in Kilberry will be partaking in the JEP Throughout the programme the children will study how a business is founded formed and run All aspects of a business will be analysed The children will then create and run their own business within a 12 week period During Week 2 of the project the class will be visited by a business person who will advise them on how to organise and run their business and on week 3 they will pitch their 6 ideas to the dreaded Dragons Watch this space to find out which business idea will get the green light Mark Molly and Lila counting the votes for the Junior Entrepreneur Programme 5th and 6th Class have been busy conducting Science experiements They have been studying forms of renewable energy and have even designed and

    Volleyball Tournament finalists 2nd 3rd class Winners Team France 2nd 3rd class runners up Team Netherlands 4th 5th Class runners up Team Portugal 5th 6th Class Winners Team Netherlands And at last an Irish team in the final Runners up Team Ireland Cumann na mBunscol Basketball Final 2015 Our boy s team travelled to Newbridge last Thursday to play Kilashee N S in the Cumann na mBunscol Basketball final This was a great occasion for the boys and we started strongly putting 4 points up on the scoreboard during the first quarter Damien and Kevin were calm under pressure as they stepped up to the free throw line to put Kilberry ahead We continued to dominate in the second quarter and went in to the second half with a ten point lead Kilashee however began to cause problems in the third quarter and our lead was reduced to six points going into the final quarter Kilashee began to show their hand and pushed Kilberry all the way to the final whistle They managed to claw back a couple of points from free throws but as we approached the final few minutes of the game Kilberry dug deep and our defense held strong as the final whistle blew to the delight of the Kilberry team and supporters Joe O Connor presented the trophy to team captain Kevin Eustace and complimented Kilberry and Kilashee on a fantastic display of basketball skill In a display of sincere sportsmanship the Kilashee team asked Kilberry for a group photograph after the presentation and we anticipate an exciting rematch with them during the blitz in March Team Kevin Eustace Capt Darragh Foy Scott Downey Jamie Whelan Dean Owens Seamus Hickey Christopher Wilson Emmet Fanning Ciarán Dunne Cian McKenna Alex Delaney and Damien Moore A team above

    water ie to learn more about being water smart in the home Do the Earth a favour be an energy saver Remember the little changes will go a long way in conserving energy Tips for Energy Conservation Turn off appliances when they are not in use Do not leave them on standby Standby can use up to 20 on some inefficient appliances Buy A rated appliances for your Home This can be a huge saving of 150 annually on your electricity bill Turn down your heating by even 1 degree Celsius and it will save you up to 150 per year of your money A 10 percent saving Buy energy efficient light bulbs CFLs instead of traditional bulbs they use 1 5th energy and last up to 10 times as long They will pay for themselves in under a year and from then on they are saving you on your electricity bill Fit a lagging jacket lagging your hot water tank will keep the water hotter for longer and will have paid for itself in a few months Don t overfill your kettle boil only as much water as you need Walk or cycle to work instead of driving it costs nothing and it s healthy for you Use the clothesline when possible Tumble dryers use a lot of energy Buy Local Produce A considerable amount of energy is consumed transporting produce around the globe reduce this by sourcing food form a local farmers market and also help the local economy In March 2010 Kilberry National School elected it s first Green Schools Committee The entire school community made great efforts to turn green in an effort to be awarded our first green flag for Litter and Waste Collections for clothes and mobile phone to be recycled are regularly organised We are also very lucky to have been visited by many guest speakers and people who have given workshops For National Tree Day in October 2012 children from 1st 6th classes enjoyed a visit to Emo Court Many thanks to Catherine Casey who helped the children paint our Green Code in the school shed It was great fun Green Code Put waste in the correct bin Recycle as much as possible Keep the school clean and tidy Take care of plants and trees It was a very exciting day in Croke Park last June when we received our first Green Flag for Litter and waste Everyone in Kilberry was very proud to raise the Green Flag As our Green Slogan says The Green School s Committee put together a Green Tips booklet last year and we hope they have proven to be helpful in Green Tips Just bring enough food for lunch that you will eat Take uneaten food home Have a lunch box instead of using foil cling film or other wrapping Re use your drink bottle Put all fruit and vegetable peels in the compost bin Re use plastic bags Rinse out all bottle cartons and plastics before

Friday all pupils are allowed to dress up for Halloween We will be hosting a Trick or Treat for Temple street All families are invited to bring 2 for this worthy cause Parents please ensure that costumes are safe and appropriate Older children are asked not to be too scary as this might upset the younger children Nuts Reminder we have children in school who have a severe nut allergy Nuts or development of a car park is to proceed Following a recosting of the proposed plans the new figure required to develop the car park is roughly 45 000 The reduction in price comes as a result of the economic downturn and a revision of construction spec Development costs will be funded from the county council a very generous contribution from the parish and fundraising As a result of this we will be fundraising over the next year Without the continued support from parents the Parish of Athy the Board of Management and local county councillors and T D s in particular Jack Wall and Mark Wall this project would not be at this stage We thank you all for your continued support to ensure the safety of the children in Kilberry N S KTunes To start our fundraising campaign we will be launching our Christmas C D in the next two weeks This C D is currently being developed and sold by our 6 th Class mini company KTunes All children in the school from Junior Infants to 6 th class will feature in the production of the C D The children are currently learning the songs for the C D The recording team will be in school next week to record all the children singing their class songs The C D will retail at 10 with all profits going to the car park development fund So buy an extra special gift for the loved ones in your family with this unique product 6 th class are currently taking orders
