This is how much the party political system cares about Longford At the Longford Fianna Fáil selection convention a gender quota was imposed on the day of the convention Let s repeat that on the day of the convention If Fianna Fáil was serious about the gender quota then they would have given the local Fianna Fáil convention reasonable notice of their intentions The other party is not much better The present incumbent has during his past two terms not achieved anything of real substance for the constituency Longford should not accept mediocre representation from a backbencher that does what the chief whip tells him and has not been seen to challenge the party political line I will provide representation to advance Longford Longford is in a central location that is a prime location for business for logistical reasons What is needed is to improve the infrastructure in county Longford and in particular improve access to reasonable broadband as more and more people start to work from home Movement of Irish Prison Service In a recent report it was recommended that the Irish Prison Service move from Longford Any advantages gained by moving the service are completely disproportionate to what will occur to the staff of the prison headquarters and for the local community The movement of the service should be the last resort Reading through the report it is clear that these are internal matters and the movement of the organisation from it s current location is a disproportionate response when more appropriate internal measures can be made The report makes a risible expression of sympathy to the domestic situation of staff many of whom have successfully integrated and have made a contribution to the local community Longford is located in a central location close to the prison campuses in Dublin the Midlands the North and West This is yet another excuse to re centralise a national service at the expense and to the insult of rural Ireland Child Benefit Reform Another issue we need to tackle is the fact that tens of millions every year leave this country and go to Eastern European countries I and others in the Independent Alliance are formulating a policy to tackle this at the moment In essence we would do away with child benefit and replace it with a payment linked to the school attendance of children naturally using some common sense around unavoidable absences and for those who are being home schooled here in Ireland Motor Tax People who cannot afford to upgrade to a newer care are being unfairly asked to pay more motor tax than those who can afford a newer car A flat rate motor tax should be introduced irrespective of engine size or emissions of 250 per vehicle with a 5cent per litre levy on retail petrol and diesel This is a fairer approach as the more you drive the more you pay Local Property Tax Local Property Tax should be abolished for owner occupier homes Second
