  • MA Festive Arts guest lecturers – Jo Mangan | Irish World Academy of Music and Dance
    the UK in 2011 It was an extraordinary 18 months and made me reexamine everything I was doing and want to do more bigger and create opportunities for other artists I started to see that creating my own work was only one part of what I could and wanted to do I decided to create the BIG House Festival at Castletown House Celbridge where we are based It took a huge amount of work to raise the approximately 350k required to make it happen and get the project over the line with the OPW to happen in and around our very precious 18th century base It was framed as Ireland s first site speicifc arts festival and was a resounding success We had 6 000 people over 3 days and ended up winning national awards for the event What has been your most exciting moment as a festival professional to date Probably walking around the property at Castletown on the final day of the Big House Festival I had shed the walkie started to see the work I had programmed and saw all these very happy audience members It was excitement and satisfaction combined In your opinion what is the most important thing for people hoping to work in festivals and events To be multi skilled There are lots of openings for people who can hop between Volunteer Coordinator Event Management Artists Liaison etc If programming is your thing do it for yourself first Its rare to get an opportunity to programme unless you already have About Jo Jo is CEO of The Performance Corporation and Director of Big House Productions She was Artistic Director of the Bram Stoker Festival in 2014 more than doubling the audience from the previous year She worked as International Programmer for Limerick City of Culture and was recently nominated for an Irish Times Irish Theatre Award alongside former colleagues for her work Highlight of her progamme was the Royal de Luxe visit Jo founded and curated the BIG House Festival Irelands first ever large scale site specific arts festival involving over 250 artists and 6000 audience members awarded the ERIC for Best Irish Festival Her background is as a theatre director Selected credits for The Performance Corporation include Slattery s Sago Saga Dublin Theatre Festival Swampoodle KISS USA and GAA Washington DC Power Point Dublin Fringe Festival and Tampere Festival Finland Dr Ledbetter s Experiment Kilkenny Arts Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe Drive By Cork Midsummer Dublin Fringe and Canterbury Festivals Other theatre work includes Bogboy Tall Tales Beware of the Storybook Wolves The Ark and What the Folk Siamsa Tire She also has Radio TV and Film directing credits Her work has been presented on 3 continents and won plaudits and awards internationally and nationally including a number of Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards She was awarded the 2011 12 Jerome Hynes Clore Cultural Leadership Fellowship in the UK and as part of the intensive year long programme honed her skills working at
