    Biographies Inbhear Journal of Irish Music and Dance Media Social Media Comhaimseartha Of Our Time Archive Maurice Gunning Venue Building design Opening Hours Blas Café Map and parking Contact General Enquiries Faculty Staff Home Postgraduate Programmes MA Ethnochoreology MA Ethnochoreology MA Ethnochoreology Testimonials As a graduate of the MA in Ethnochoreology the programme has provided me with a solid theoretical grounding and superb practical experience in field research I feel the programme has aided the development of both my conceptual and practical practice and has presented me with the opportunity to delve deeper into the research and understanding of dance I am delighted about being involved in a programme that is characterized by its willingness to embrace an open minded approach to the anthropological study of dance Jennifer de Brún The MA programme in Ethnochoreology has broadened my knowledge of cultural dance and increased my ability to examine movement as a possible reflection of the culture from which it originates I feel this course has prepared me to bridge gaps of cultural misunderstandings by drawing connections between cultures through movement I am currently involved in researching Ethiopian Traditional dances and their influences on my creative practices as a Western contemporary dancer RAS Mikey Courtney The MA in Ethnochoreology at the Irish World Academy gave me the invaluable chance to explore dance from a research based perspective via history and the social sciences while also engaging with the same dance traditions in my own body This unique approach to thinking writing and moving all in one setting provided me an opportunity to encounter the dance traditions of other cultures as well as enriched my understanding of my own dance practice I now work as both a professional dancer and dance researcher concertizing teaching and presenting at academic conferences on traditional music

    Hours Blas Café Map and parking Contact General Enquiries Faculty Staff Home Postgraduate Programmes MA Ethnochoreology MA Ethnochoreology Introduction Dance or structured human movement practice is an important aspect of the lives of human beings the world over Ethnochoreology the study of dance movement and culture aims to extend our knowledge and understanding of diverse cultures and the movement experiences that these cultures offer Ethnochoreology is an academic interdisciplinary field and is inclusive of all dance or structured human movement practices Through critical examination of relevant literature within the social sciences exposure to diverse dance practices theory and practice first hand experience in the field and subsequent reflection on the process of doing fieldwork students of ethnochoreology document and examine the different meanings of dance and movement within the context of culture This assists in extending students horizons of understanding into how and why people move the way they do and what this tells us about the cultures from which these practices have emerged Designed and directed by Dr Catherine Foley the Master of Arts in Ethnochoreology was established in 1996 at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance and was the first programme of its type at any university in Europe In this pioneering spirit it continues to be a leading programme in The Master of Arts in Ethnochoreology is a one year fulltime taught postgraduate programme It offers specialised training in the history theory and methods of ethnochoreology while acknowledging the significance of practice in learning and in research It collaborates with other postgraduate programmes at the Academy such as the Master of Arts Degree in Irish Traditional Dance Performance and the Master of Arts Degree in Ethnomusicology It provides a strong foundation for doctoral research The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance offers a suite

    throughout the country and abroad in a variety of contexts and venues including the Royal Albert Hall Barbican Project Arts Centre in Dublin the University of Limerick Concert Hall The National Concert Hall in Dublin The Waterfront Hall in Belfast and the Galway Arts Centre In 1992 he was invited to record at the Traditional Music Archive in Dublin with the bodhran player percussionist Mel Mercier Niall has performed Mícheál Ó Súileabháin s concerto for flute and chamber orchestra Oilean on several occasions in Ireland and Britain and as part of the jazz trad fusion group Hiberno Jazz He is featured on both the recording of the 1994 Eigse na Laoi Across the Water and the television series A River of Sound made by Hummingbird Productions Niall also features on the Realworld CD The Gathering Niall s solo recording Don t Touch the Elk was released in June 1999 on his own independent label Niall performed as part of the Eurovision interval piece Lumen and features on the commercial recording of that piece Niall usually performs with Sandra Joyce an innovative bodhran player and vocalist and guitar players such as Chris Kelly and Clive Carroll Other performances have included a six week tour in Britain and northern Ireland with a South Indian Katakali dance drama group a two week tour of India appearances at several European festivals and the North Texas Flute festival in Dallas the second largest flute festival of its kind in the world In December 1999 Niall performed with Sandra Joyce vocals bodhran and Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin piano for De Tiende Nacht van Radio 3 This performance was recorded and broadcast in January 2000 Current projects include collaborative performances with saxophonist Ken Edge and the contemporary Dahdga Dance Company Niall has previously been director of the MA Irish Traditional Music Performance at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance University of Limerick He finally finished his PhD entitled The Art of Juncture The Creative Transformations of Traditional Irish Music which examines cognitive structures that traditional musicians use to organise their oral music in a literate world He has been on the committee of the Folk Music Society of Ireland and director of the University of Limerick based projects Nomad aimed at honouring the music cultures of the traveling peoples at the University Niall was formerly co director of the Sionna Festival of European Traditional Music and the Blas International Summer School of Traditional Irish Music and Dance a university accredited programme He has been guest director of the Adult Folkworks sumerschool in Durham England He is the author of articles concerning issues of style and literacy in traditional Irish music and was formerly editor of the online journal for Irish music and dance Inbhear Niall is currently the Associate Director of the Irish World Academy and the Director of Undergraduate Studies responsible for the BA Irish Music and Dance BA Voice and Dance and Certificate in Music and Dance Contact Details Niall Keegan Room No IW1
