    Hours Blas Café Map and parking Contact General Enquiries Faculty Staff Home Postgraduate Programmes MA Ethnochoreology MA Ethnochoreology Introduction Dance or structured human movement practice is an important aspect of the lives of human beings the world over Ethnochoreology the study of dance movement and culture aims to extend our knowledge and understanding of diverse cultures and the movement experiences that these cultures offer Ethnochoreology is an academic interdisciplinary field and is inclusive of all dance or structured human movement practices Through critical examination of relevant literature within the social sciences exposure to diverse dance practices theory and practice first hand experience in the field and subsequent reflection on the process of doing fieldwork students of ethnochoreology document and examine the different meanings of dance and movement within the context of culture This assists in extending students horizons of understanding into how and why people move the way they do and what this tells us about the cultures from which these practices have emerged Designed and directed by Dr Catherine Foley the Master of Arts in Ethnochoreology was established in 1996 at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance and was the first programme of its type at any university in Europe In this pioneering spirit it continues to be a leading programme in The Master of Arts in Ethnochoreology is a one year fulltime taught postgraduate programme It offers specialised training in the history theory and methods of ethnochoreology while acknowledging the significance of practice in learning and in research It collaborates with other postgraduate programmes at the Academy such as the Master of Arts Degree in Irish Traditional Dance Performance and the Master of Arts Degree in Ethnomusicology It provides a strong foundation for doctoral research The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance offers a suite

    Programmes MA Festive Arts MA Festive Arts Introduction The MA Festive Arts Programme at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance offers students the opportunity to develop skills in arts management curating production performance and research with an emphasis on festivity and the role of festival in society Bringing together artists performers curators producers and researchers the MA Festive Arts Programme provides a unique context for the acquisition and development of skills in this field There is a strong emphasis on the development of practical skills and experience with a central internship module and a focus on working with practitioners and experts in the field Students on the MA Festive Arts programme complete a series of taught modules designed to support the development of their research projects and also work in small groups toward the realization of public projects The internship elective and final project options allow students to develop expertise in an individual area of research curating and production or performance The MA Festive Arts Programme is a one year full time postgraduate programme The programme offers a comprehensive grounding in the key skills around the creation and production of festivals and other related arts events These include Arts management Curating and commissioning Management of funding structures and applications Project management Event development and production Effective arts marketing and audience development Community engagement and outreach This MA programme will enable students to attain practical and theoretical perspectives around the role of festival and festivity in society It will also provide students with valuable opportunities to work in the field of festival management creation and production through the internship module There is an emphasis on creative and cultural entrepreneurship on developing sustainable enterprises and on building links with key stakeholders such as civic authorities private business the tourism sector

    Map and parking Contact General Enquiries Faculty Staff Home Postgraduate Programmes MA Irish Traditional Dance Performance MA Irish Traditional Dance Performance Introduction The Master of Arts in Irish Traditional Dance Performance is a one year full time taught postgraduate programme It is unique in that it is the only programme of its type at any university in the world The programme provides advanced training in Irish traditional dance performance practices within a variety of historical theoretical and dance performance contexts Through engagement with master tutors and lecturers students explore aspects of repertoire style and choreography for a reflexive critically aware and embodied understanding of Irish dance performance practices In addition students examine contemporary dance choreographic techniques within the context of western theatrical dance and body awareness studies Solo and ensemble work both original and traditional allow for the artistic development of students while adhering and honouring the artistic integrity history and identity of Irish dance With performance at its core students are encouraged to engage in critical debate within academic modules to equip them with the necessary academic and performance skills required for further performance and research The programme provides an artistically secure environment for students to develop their own voices through the medium of Irish dance Through its elective system the programme facilitates dialogue with other MA programmes at the academy including the MA in Ethnochoreology the MA in Ethnomusicology the MA in Contemporary Dance Performance the MA in Irish Tradiitonal Music Performance In addition students on the MA in Irish traditional dance performance programme are offered the opportunity to learn dance research methods and techniques to develop their critical awareness and appreciation of dance studies in general In addition Labanotation the universal movement documentation tool is included within the study of dance methods Master tutors on the MA

    in musical interaction to support people who have additional needs because of medical psychological physical or emotional problems Music therapists work in a range of settings including nursing homes residential care facilities community settings schools and hospitals Music therapists are responsible to develop and implement appropriate programmes after assessment of clients and groups Outcomes of the work are evaluated and reported to colleagues within the multidisciplinary team Music Therapists are experts in using the gentle non intrusive non verbal qualities of music making in conjunction with their insight and training in therapeutic relationships to develop programmes that help identify and address client s needs Qualified Music Therapists work as members of a multidisciplinary team and are considered part of the Allied Health professional work force in hospitals nursing homes hostels clinics and schools The course requires a high level of music skill on entry Experience in paid or volunteer work with people who have a disability or experience some sort of social disadvantage exclusion is required As the programme is offered in an international academy of music and dance students from many places and backgrounds are represented in the intake cohort including to date students from Canada China England Germany Greece Northern Ireland Norway and the USA Fieldwork Placements Placements are organised by the programme in conjunction with Qualified Music Therapists employed on the island Students are advised their placement sites and times and must complete them as agreed supervisors dates and sites are non negotiable The costs of travel to and from placement and any costs such as purchasing music or having to stay overnight if the placement is not local to Limerick must be covered by the student Careers Qualified Music Therapists are employed in the health service the education department community programmes and or are self employed Graduates of MA in Music Therapy at the Irish World Academy have gained full time positions in facilities such as Cheeverstown House in Dublin Cope Foundation in Cork St Joseph s Charleville and the Milford Care Centre in Limerick Other graduates are or have been employed in a wide range of services including the Mayo Mental Health Service Bluebox Creative Learning Centre in Limerick and Enable Ireland and a number of graduates work at various locations in the North for the Northern Ireland Music Therapy Trust Entrance Requirements A high level of music skills in performance A degree qualification or equivalent in any of the following music psychology health sciences medicine education or related discipline Experience of working with people who have additional needs A willingness to engage in personal development through attending psychotherapy An interview audition will be offered to short listed candidates It is not possible to enter the course without successfully completing the audition process Provision is made for international students All candidates should check the FAQ link Course Director Acting Dr Alpha Woodward Alpha has accumulated over 15 years of clinical music therapy experience and internship supervision in ge riatric populations and served as the professional
