  • Cantoral Vocal Ensemble Lunchtime Concert, Thursday Nov 3rd 1.15 pm | Irish World Academy of Music and Dance

  • ‘An Unsettled People: The Culture, Arts and Politics of the Karen of Burma’. | Irish World Academy of Music and Dance

  • Autumn 2011 Lunchtime Concert Series Commences at the Academy | Irish World Academy of Music and Dance
    a much sought after presence at tionóls Uilleann piper gatherings around the globe His most recent CD Legacy featuring his daughters Bríd and Niamh on fiddles gives an insight to the unique contributions the present day Dunnes offer to the current traditional music scene Dermot Byrne is best known as the button box player with Altan From Buncrana Co Donegal he learned his music from his father Tomás Ó Beirn who comes from Teileann area of South West Donegal Growing up in a musical family he met many of the old masters of Donegal fiddling while growing up These included the legendary John Doherty Con Cassidy James Byrne Tommy Peoples Danny Meehan and many more They made a great impact on the young Dermot who developed a unique style of button accordion playing He has guested on collaborations with many great musicians including Seamus and Manus McGuire Sharon Shannon Frankie Gavin Pierre Schryer Tim O Brien and the late jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli His eponymous solo recording which he has reissued recently received much critical acclaim Liam O Connor is one of Ireland s leading fiddle players His father Mick O Connor is a noted flute player music collector researcher and member of the Castle Céilí Band He was taught by Séamus Glacken and won several All Ireland and Oireachtas fiddle titles and was awarded TG4 Young Musician of the Year in 2002 He has performed as soloist and in duets with Liam O Flynn Noel Hill Harry Bradley In 2009 he released a critically acclaimed CD entitled Dublin Made with uilleann piper Seán McKeon He has taught at many of the major Irish music festivals such as Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy Scoil Acla and many more Admission free and all are welcome Filed Under Archive Sorry comments are closed
