  • Residential Altitude Training for High Performance Sport - The Irish Sports Council
    camps abroad by high performance sport the Institute seeks to offer residential altitude acclimation and training support to high performance sport within Ireland Following consultation with the NGBs athletes and coaches the projected requirements for residential altitude training is for a Residential pre acclimation to competition at altitude b Residential altitude acclimation as part of the training stimulus to effect a change in blood oxygen carrying capacity c Intermittent high altitude training Residential facilities should be capable of offering supervised altitude accommodation for 12 16h per day for a period of 2 4 weeks at a simulated altitude of 1700 to 2500m In addition the Institute seeks to build both capacity and expertise in altitude acclimation and altitude training for high performance sport Partnership with the Institute in the educational and professional development of the most effective altitude training programme and where possible to provide R D support to altitude training and in the validation of biomarkers capable of informing that response would be welcome The Institute would therefore welcome proposals to address the issues identified above All such proposals should be addressed to Caroline MacManus cmacmanus instituteofsport ie The deadline for proposals is 20 th December 2011 Back to

  • Paralympics Ireland and the Irish Institute of Sport honour employers for assisting athlete commitment to excellence - The Irish Sports Council
    Ireland s aim of Leading elite Paralympic athletes in achieving sustained competitive excellence would not be possible without the support of an employer who understands the demand of elite sport and is willing to back his employee to succeed in their profession and their sporting lives Currently forty athletes across nine different sports are on course or have already qualified for the Paralympic Games next year Central to the success of the Irish team as a whole has been the support of the Irish Institute of Sport IIS and its athlete support system Daragh Sheridan Head of Performance Skills at the IIS spoke of the system s success and the challenges which employers and athletes must overcome to achieve success in a professional and sporting environment An elite athlete trains up to 25 hours a week and due to the high training demands Daragh Sheridan stated that the role of an athlete s employer becomes as valid as the psychologist or any member of the coaching team Furthermore he continued to say that the Institute s Athletes Employment Support Scheme seeks to assist athletes to effectively combine work life with training and competition One athlete is benefiting through the scheme is current World Handcycling Champion Mark Rohan Mark Rohan spoke about his life as a Paralympic athlete at the event and he spoke of his life being lived in two halves The first half being an able bodied athlete who enjoyed playing for both his club and County with the GAA before a road accident left him with four broken bones in his back and damage to his heart This resulted in Mark being unable to play football again and after lengthy series of rehabilitation some of which he received in France he began his journey to becoming a World

  • Irish Institute of Sport Performance Analysis Workshop - The Irish Sports Council
    analysis within which he highlighted the key role that PA can play within the high performance sporting environment He created a strong case that PA can provide critical performance related information which when applied correctly can underpin the service delivery across all service areas within any high performance sporting environment During the afternoon sessions three case studies from analysts working in Ireland were presented The first by Alan Swanton IIS illustrated the performance analysis system which is currently in place within the high performance unit of the Irish Amateur Boxing association Johnny Bradley from the Sports Institute Northern Ireland delivered a thought provoking piece on the importance of providing performance related feedback in a context which can promote learning for the athlete and coach While Tristan Stedham concluded the day with a duel presentation which included a snapshot of his service delivery during the Men s hockey European Championships in Germany this summer While he also outlined an innovative project which Irish hockey are currently undertaking with a research group called CLARITY and Disney research The project aims to develop an automated ball tracking broadcast quality camera system which once developed can be used across a wide variety sports all

  • Institute of Sport collaborate with An Garda Siochana to deliver leading edge coach education event - The Irish Sports Council
    marks the beginning of a very exciting collaboration that we have developed with An Garda Síochána Having visited their world class training college on a number of occasions and observed their leading edge approach towards training and development we are truly honoured to access their community of excellence I would like to extend my thanks to Chief Superintendent Ann Marie McMahon who is the Director of Training Development in An Garda Síochána for providing us with this exciting and unique opportunity stated Gary Keegan Director of the Institute of Sport The programme of activities for the 2 day event will include a joint delivery between the Institute of Sport coach education team and top training practitioners from An Garda Síochána The event will address the following learning and development objectives Introduce a problem based learning approach towards high performance coach education Create an understanding of how coaches profile athletes and how this information can beintegrated into the design and implementation of a coaching programme Showcase the learning components and challenges of an coach athlete relationship Develop applied practical solutions for dealing with potential athlete conflict situations Disseminate key learning arising from IIS PEP team learning project Central to this collaboration will be the use of problem based learning as an approach to facilitate applied coach learning and development This will involve the use of Garda trainers to role play critical situations that simulate applied athlete coach scenarios Coaches in attendance will have an opportunity to test their coaching skills in a range of applied coach athlete situations and receive video feedback In addition to the applied training activities coaches will also get an opportunity to hear from Chris Jones who is the performance director with Triathlon Ireland Chris will present his approach towards athlete profiling and his views on the
