  • Institute of Sport to deliver 3 day training event - The Irish Sports Council
    and expert service providers The initiative forms part of the Institute s training and development programme entitled the Pursuit of Excellence PEP The up coming 3 day event provides the Institute with a unique opportunity to interface with 2 critical professional communities who provide a series of specialized supports to athletes In total 45 expert service providers from 9 scientific disciplines and 25 coaches from 13 sports will attend the event This is a unique professional gathering that is highly skilled and highly motivated to achieve excellence The Institute of Sport is delighted to provide this training and development support to such an important group of professionals in our community stated Gary Keegan Director Irish Institute of Sport Top speakers from Sailing Boxing and Paralympic Cycling will present in depth case studies designed to showcase unique collaborative practices between athletes coaches and expert service providers Annalise and I are delighted to be asked to present some of our experiences managing the post game experience The knowledge exchanged between athletes coaches and service providers is critical to achieving effectiveness in high performance sport stated Rory Fitzpatrick High Performance Coach Irish Sailing Association Other key speakers will include Brian Nugent Head Coach Irish Cycling and Billy Walsh Head Coach Irish Amateur Boxing association Each coach will be joined by key members of their performance support team in showcasing collaborative practices within their respective sport In preparation for the event the Institute has identified 3 key objectives for the event The objectives include 1 Identify the key professional competencies concerning effective teamwork and collaboration 2 Discuss how an athlete coach relationship can exchange and apply the knowledge derived from their performance science support 3 Explore possible evaluation methods concerning collaborative teamwork during the post competition period The theme of multi disciplinary support practices

    through injury without pain Built using NASA Differential Air Pressure DAP technology this medical and performance device has proven extremely successful for both rehabilitation and training for performance The Alter G s unweighting technology reduces the impact of walking or running Once you zip yourself into the air chamber with specialised neoprene shorts a calibration takes place and the precise unweighting is achieved by using air in the pressure controlled chamber which inflates and lifts the user to his or her desired weight bearing percentage Megan Kiely Athletics Ireland Junior 400mH is using the Alter G to supplement rehabilitation post injury Weight sensors in the treadmill allow the Alter G to be operated at anywhere from 20 100 of the athlete s body weight The implications of running impact free are obvious to anyone suffering from the lower limb stresses of high volume training Primarily the Alter G treadmills are used for rehabilitation from injury and post surgery to facilitate early weight bearing at a reduced body weight protecting the healing tissue while maintaining normal running or walking mechanics Increasingly though the Alter G is being utilised for training with high mileage athletes incorporating treadmill sessions at reduced body weight

    phases such as how to measure training monotony and how to plan a player s week by the volume of training combined with the quality and intensity needed I feel this programme has helped me to improve on areas of the court where I am weak and I believe that if I continue to train with such a detailed physical programme in the future it will help me reach my full physical potential as a Badminton player Chloe Magee 2012 Olympian July 13 th 2012 Coach Mentor Lee Jay Boc providing technical coaching to Chloe Magee during a pre game training camp Pre Game Coach Support Camp The Garda Training College Templemore Co Tipperary After the above initial programme support the Pursuit of Excellence Programme then led me to the Garda Training College for an intensive weekend s training June 22 nd 23 rd This weekend was a surreal experience and took me right out of my comfort zone I was with a number of prestigious Irish coaches who would be involved in the Olympics and we were able to share various experiences from our own coaching background During the weekend we all undertook various high stress training scenarios that we aligned with possible problems we may have to deal with at the Games I learned about the importance of using the x3 P in any problem situation Pause Prioritize Perform This problem solving process assisted me to manage my performance in the Games June 23 rd 2012 Daniel Magee right pictured with other PEP Podium coaches working with Garda facilitators at the pre game coach support camp in the Garda College Templemore Co Tipperary The Garda training facilitators were second to none in terms of making scenarios feel real and they were able to make us think under pressure over the entire weekend The post weekend evaluation and feedback was a great encouragement and helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses as a coach The continued support and guidance from all involved that weekend made it such a memorable and beneficial experience Marino Institute of Education BWF Pre Olympic Training camp A week with Lee Jae Bok Last but certainly not least I was able to undertake a week s mentorship with Legendary Korean coach Lee Jae Bok Lee a former Korean National Champion and English National coach was a massive plus to my support programme Lee has a certain presence that is hard to replicate and can silence a room His opening message Who here is here to do their best Some players raise their hands Well your best is not good enough you have to give more than your best if you want to find your full potential Lee Jae Bok 13 th 2012 Lee Jay Boc pictured with Chloe Magee and her coach Daniel MaGee at a recent pre game camp Having a coach like Lee involved with training is a huge plus for Irish badminton His mentality work ethic and love of the game

    medals achieved at the London 2012 games originated within this PEP Podium community The Horizon Programme The Horizon compliments the Podium Programme by focusing on the development needs of top high performance coaches working with junior and developmental carded athletes Coaches on this programme experience a focused professional development experience around the key themes impacting high potential athletes in a development context On November 22 nd 23 rd the Carlton Hotel in West Dublin provided the location for the first Horizon Programme event The theme for the event focused on London 2012 A Coach Performance Perspective 5 coaches from the PEP Podium community presented in depth case studies on their performance experience at the London 2012 Games The Cross Fertilization PEP Horizon coaches discussing the days learning and enjoying an evening meal as a community This is the first time that we have witnessed the development of a real community of practice within our Pursuit of Excellence community The Podium level coaches generously provided the aspiring Horizon coaches with a real insight into the challenges of delivering top performance in a games context We are extremely excited about our plans for the 2013 Horizon Programme given the new mentorship influence that our PEP Podium coaches can provide towards the development of next generation coaching talent stated Gary Keegan Director Irish Institute of Sport Over the 2 day event the 5 PEP Podium coaches provided in depth case studies on the following themes Combat Leadership An Olympic Perspective Billy Walsh Head Coach High Performance Unit IABA Managing Conflict A Mentorship Approach James Lafferty Head Coach Paralympic Swimming A Coach Lifestyle Management Perspective Brian Nugent Head Coach Paralympic Cycling The First Time Games Experience Daniel MaGee National Coach Badminton Ireland From Cadet to Olympian A Sailing Perspective Rory Fitzpatrick Coach Annalise Murphy

    Boxing Sailing Paralympic Cycling Paralympic Swimming Paralympic Athletics Judo and Swimming Coaches completed a range exercises designed to help them unpack and refocus after their Games experience Just a huge thank you for the engaging and appropriate workshop content and delivery Ciaran Ward Judo The programme met a need that I struggled to articulate James Lafferty Paralympic Swimming In 2012 the Institute of Sport implemented a Games specific coach support programme entitled The Podium Programme The Podium Programme offers coaches a diverse array of supports involving informal i e mentorship and formal i e simulated training events based performance supports In total 12 coaches from 9 sports participated in the programme Coaches have accessed an individual grant aid support designed to build their performance capacity leading into and after the London 2012 Games This has led to the recruitment of top mentors critical expertise and sport specific training This support has directly influenced the performance needs of 29 athletes competing at the London 2012 games The PEP Podium community was responsible for 29 athletes who competed at the London 2012 Games In total 12 out of the 21 medals arising from London 2012 are connected with coaches on the Podium programme This is a phenomenal achievement as coaches play a critical role in enabling athlete performance s tated Gary Keegan Director Irish Institute of Sport Mary Bulfin Nature Tour Guide completing a foraging exercise in Farnham woods with a group of PEP Podium coaches Throughout the 2 days coaches engaged in a series of activities including 1 2 1 Debrief Each coach completed a 1 2 1 debrief with an expert facilitator Peer to Peer Exchange Coaches engaged with their peers and shared a common experience Career Mentorship Coaches accessed long term personal planning support from key experts Reflective Practice
