    The following is an overview of key deliverables Podium Community Supporting Ireland s World Class High Performance Coaches The Podium programme ran from January 2012 January 2013 12 coaches from 8 sports joined the inaugural Podium community Podium coaches were involved with 28 athletes who competed at the London 2012 Games 12 21 medals achieved at London 2012 originated from within the Podium group Podium coaches were given targeted grant aid totaling 30 000 in order to enhance their performance capacity around the London 2012 games A pre Games performance simulation event was run in partnership with An Garda Siochana 8 weeks before the London 2012 games Each podium coach was provided with a 1 2 1 post game support package designed to assist coaches as they transition from the London 2012 experience The Podium community includes the following coaches Billy Walsh Boxing Pete Taylor Boxing Zauri Antia Boxing Rory Fitzpatrick Sailing Ross Killian Sailing Pat Furlong Paralympic Athletics Brian Nugent Paralympic Cycling James Lafferty Paralympic Swimming Daniel McGee Badminton Ciaran Ward Judo Paul Donovan Swimming Ronald Claes Swimming June 8 th 2012 The Podium Community Pre Game Support Event Horizon Community Developing Ireland s Emerging High Performance Coaches The Horizon programme ran from November 2012 December 2013 22 coaches from 13 sports joined the inaugural Horizon community Horizon coaches were attended 4 2 day performance seminars involving key applied case studies provided by coaches in the Podium community 6 athletes joined the Horizon community and formed Ireland s first athlete coach transition group with the view becoming a high performance coach after their athlete career Horizon coaches accessed on going performance mentorship and completed a series of key project tasks over a 15 month period The Horizon community includes the following coaches Lynne Algar Triathlon Elena Maslova Triathlon Sean

    Sport the expert steering group were given the following terms of reference Define the role of a high performance coach Define the high performance context around the coach Identify the key underpinning knowledge sets and practical competencies concerning the role of a high performance coach and the context around this role Identify suitable formal informal and non formal coach development supports relative to a coach s stage of development Identify suitable methods to assess recognize and validate coach development outcomes September 10 th 2013 The PEP expert steering group final group session The expert steering met on 2 occasions and achieved the following high level outcomes Agreed the following definition for a high performance coach A high performance coach is a professional engaged in coaching managing and leading in order to deliver world class outcomes in a dynamic and competitive global arena Approved a conceptual framework for the development of high performance coaches which involves 12 key professional capabilities across the coaching management and leadership spectrum Agreed that the format for coach training and development must continue to be bespoken and highly practical thus challenging the coach to continuously reflect on their professional practice Agreed that it was important to recognize high performance coaching as a profession and therefore provide ways for coaches to get due recognition for their support role The outcomes from the expert steering group has resulted in the Institute of Sport taking the following decisions Implement a long term support vision for high performance coaching that reflects the complex and non linear nature of the coaching role before during and after the 2016 games Continue to invest in the development of a professional learning community ethos by tasking coaches to share and reflect on common professional challenges as professional peers Continue to map the type of

    programme will offer the following supports over a 3 year period 1 On Board Need Analysis Each coach will be provided with an on board needs analysis service designed to identify annual critical performance factors and thus initiate a programme of individualized performance supports throughout the year 2 Performance Simulation Events In preparation for high level competition coaches will be given the opportunity to attend 3 performance simulation events prior to the 2016 games whereby key practical scenarios will be used to examine and develop targeted performance capacities These events offer unique peer to peer feedback exchange whereby coaches can reflect on the quality of their coaching management or leadership practice 3 Individual Group Level Performance Mentorship The Institute will offer individual and group level mentorship sessions across a range of themes including coaching management and leadership Highly experienced mentors from the international stage will be recruited in order to provide targeted and highly practical mentorship support 4 Financial Support to Build Performance Capacity Coaches will be given the opportunity to self direct their performance support by applying for some individual grant aid to purchase key performance capability relative to their sport These supports may involve mentorship equipment or a short course in a specific discipline The entry criteria for the podium programme includes the following benchmarks 1 Coach Performance Track Record The number of athletes that an applicant has coached who have won individual or team medals at Olympic Paralympic World or European events The number of events whereby each coach has represented Ireland at major level events including Olympic Paralympic World or European events Coach Potential Rio 2016 2 Each coach must be officially appointed in a coaching role working with senior carded athletes in a national sports body Coaches will be tracking to coach athletes likely to

    coach will be provided with an on board needs analysis service designed to identify annual critical performance factors and thus initiate a programme of individualized performance supports throughout the year 2 Knowledge Development Events Horizon coaches will be provided with 2 key knowledge development events designed to build their knowledge and capability across the combined themes of coaching management and leadership These events will involve case studies delivered by Podium coaches in accordance with the needs identified across the Horizon community during the on boarding needs analysis 3 Performance Simulation Events In preparation for high level competition coaches will be given the opportunity to attend 1 performance simulation event prior to the 2016 games whereby key practical scenarios will be used to examine targeted performance capacities These events offer unique peer to peer feedback exchange whereby coaches can reflect on the quality of their coaching management or leadership practice 4 Innovative Project Tasks Hawkeye The Podium Den Horizon coaches will tasked in groups to complete knowledge building projects around key performance topics These project tasks will assessed by podium coaches in a dragons den styled format In addition building on the success of last year s Hawkeye initiative coaches will be tasked to observe and peer review each other s practice and share the outcome of this with other coaches in their community 5 Individual Group Level Mentorship The Institute will offer individual and group level mentorship sessions across a range of themes in coaching management and leadership Podium coaches will be used to provide high practical group level mentorship around key project task Note those horizon coaches who will be involved in the qualification mix for Rio 2016 will be given the opportunity to join the Podium programme in June 2015 The entry criteria for the horizon programme includes
