    and national or international security The field of Geoinformatics seeks to address these needs by developing and applying a broad range of tools and methods rooted in information technology including geographical information systems GIS remote sensing global positioning systems GPS satellite navigation systems the Internet and the World Wide Web mobile telephony computer graphics and visualisation within an holistic and integrated framework for problem solving strategic planning and decision support The MSc in Applied Science Geographical Information Systems Remote Sensing at University College Cork has been designed to address the growing need for science trained postgraduates who are technically aware and competent to work in the field of geoinformatics particularly as applied to environmental and resource management The Degree will be offered for the first time in September 2009 and presents a 12 month full time programme of study that encompasses both the theoretical and the practical aspects of geoinformatics The Department of Geography co ordinates and is responsible for the programme with key additional contributions by staff from the Department of Computer Science UCC s Coastal and Marine Resources Centre Guest speakers who are practicing Geoinformaticians in academic commercial and government settings will be invited to present aspects of
