    Developed in conjunction with Ext Joom com Geotechnical Research Group The Geotechnical Research Group at IT Sligo carries out applied research to understand soil structure interaction problems and to develop innovative design concepts for complex geotechnical problems Geotechnical centrifuge modelling is the most powerful investigative tool for revealing the mechanisms that govern the behaviour of complex soil structure interaction problems IT Sligo is home to the only geotechnical centrifuge in Ireland and one of only 3 drum centrifuges in the EU Geotechnical research at IT Sligo focuses on specific challenges relating to the off shore industry Research interests include Use of full flow penetrometers for measuring the undrained shear strength and consolidation characteristics of soft soil Geotechnical performance of offshore anchoring systems for floating facilities Predicting the settlement of embankments constructed on soft ground Physical modelling of soil structure interaction problems using a geotechnical centrifuge The Group collaborates with a number of national and international partners These include Trinity College Dublin University College Dublin University of Western Australia Virginia Tech USA Industry collaborators include Deep Sea Anchors Norway In Situ SI UK Maccaferri Italy Terram UK Linear Composites UK To date the group has been funded primarily through HEA and

    Events Gallery Research Innovation Research development and innovation at a glance Delivering impact for industry Research and innovation activity across the Institutes Ontario Students Homecoming Study Programme Ireland Homecoming Study Programme About IHSP Programme Contact Us Developed in conjunction with Ext Joom com Mitochondrial Biology Radiation Research The 1mn Mitochondrial Biology and Radiation Research MBRR Group at IT Sligo is led by Science Foundation Ireland SFI Stokes Lecturer Dr James Murphy The research team is based in the School of Science in IT Sligo where the custom built lab includes state of the art proteomics and molecular biology equipment a cell culture facility as well as a sunlight simulator and a high energy VHF radiowave generator The ongoing SFI funded research focuses on identifying subtle changes in mitochondrial dynamics as well as mitochondrial function and mitochondrial DNA in skin cells following low level sub lethal simulated sunlight exposure The research is also part funded by the Radiowave Therapy Research Institute Western Australia Collaborators include the Radiowave Therapy Research Institute Perth Australia Beaumont Hospital Dublin Institute of Technology and McMaster University Canada The group has published 10 peer reviewed publications since 2009 Since 2008 James Murphy has been awarded 500 000

    Students Homecoming Study Programme Ireland Homecoming Study Programme About IHSP Programme Contact Us Developed in conjunction with Ext Joom com Smooth Muscle Research Centre and Ion Channel Biotechnology Centre ICBC These groups comprise the largest group of researchers in Ireland or UK to investigate the control of smooth muscle function The Smooth Muscle Research Centre brings internationally recognised expertise in ion channel pharmacology The Centre investigates the role of calcium in smooth muscle function the influence that ion channels have in controlling mechanisms of contraction in healthy and diseased tissue and how this can lead to a better understanding of diseases such as urinary incontinence and urethral physiology erectile dysfunction lymphoedema arthritis and diseases of the vascular system The Smooth Muscle Research Centre published 99 peer reviewed papers from 1998 2008 The centre collaborates with academic and clinical partners internationally and is funded through a range of international sources including National Institute of Health Wellcome Trust Diabetes UK and Science Foundation Ireland The Ion Channel Biotechnology Centre ICBC is an Applied Research Enhancement Centre funded through Enterprise Ireland The ICBC draws on the intellectual property developed within the Smooth Muscle Research centre to collaborate with industry and deliver commercial outputs The ICBC s cross functional team offers a core competence in immunohistochemistry and staining for specific targets The ICBC has filed one patent since 2010 Health research at DKIT is underpinned by the work of the Organic Resources Research Group and the Electrochemistry Group which in collaboration with the Centre of Applied Sciences for Health CASH at Institute of Technology Tallaght Dublin develops nanostructured materials for electrochemical based biosensor systems for the detection of biomolecules On a combined basis this research has received 5 5mn in research funding between 2006 and 2010 National Priority Area Therapeutic Synthesis Formulation Processing and
