    research in Ireland Mr Clohessy s research to Doctorate level in the Department of Arts Education and Physical Education at Marry Immaculate College Limerick will look at whether or not there are benefits to primary school teachers with additional expertise in physical education PE teaching classes other than their own for PE The study will observe two teachers who have received additional training in PE while they teach at least two hours of PE to classes other than their own each week It will take place over a five month period and interviews and focus groups will be conducted with all the teachers involved in order to assess progress Class swapping for PE is a feature in many primary schools where teachers have particular interests and skills in PE However no specific documentation illustrating how this works on a day to day basis exists and there is a need to examine the positive and negative effects it could have on teaching and learning In 2007 the INTO suggested that a review of the issue of specialisation with regard to enhancing and improving how PE is taught in Irish primary schools Mr Clohessy s research may contribute to the discussion on

    Treacy s research to Doctorate Level at the Mathematics Department St Patrick s College Drumcondra looks at the experiences of teachers and pupils when attempting to change their approach to teaching mathematics During the study the school changed from traditional textbook dependent mathematics lessons Over the period of a year the study highlighted factors which hindered the new teaching methods and factors which helped Teachers reported that professional development and support from other teachers helped them to change how they teach maths Factors which restricted them from changing were teacher uncertainty and external policy demands It was found that teachers felt a lack of autonomy when following maths courses in textbooks This sense of autonomy increased as the study progressed The research suggests that textbooks reduce teachers professional freedom and some teachers feel pressurised into finishing textbooks This research has implications for curriculum implementation curriculum policy teacher education policy and educational policy Ms Treacy s work highlights the need to consider teacher confidence and teacher autonomy when reforming mathematics teaching and the amount of support schools need when implementing school wide initiatives More specifically this study highlights the need for policy makers to recognise the importance of peer support and
