    Employment Get Involved In Irish Life Health Housing Information about Ireland Intercultural Fora Learning English Learning Irish Multilingual Information Education Own Language Qualifications Own Lang Police Own Language Crime Own Language Health Own Language Welfare Own Language Life Here Own Language Jobs Own Language Housing Own Language Census Own Language Privacy Own Language Volunteer Own Language Qualification Recognition Social Welfare Visas Voting Integration Events 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 Publications Our Publications Other Publications Academic Central Statistics Office ESRI European Migration Net Equality Authority State Agencies HSE Police Service Garda NESC NCCRI OECD Police Service Garda Sporting Organisations UNHCR Miscellaneous Useful Weblinks Irish sites Government sites NGOs Research Centres International Sites Useful Contacts Contact Us Translation tool provided by Google The Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration does not take any responsibility for quality of translation Register of Electors Information Leaflet in 17 languages 29 10 2013 Dear All The draft register of electors for 2014 2015 will be put on display by all city and county councils for their areas over the period 1 November 2013 to 25 November 2013 as required under the Electoral Act 1992 This provides an opportunity for the public to check that they are registered correctly before the draft register is finalised and published on 1 February 2014 The new register then comes into effect on 15 February 2014 and will be the one in use for the European and Local elections to be held between 22 and 25 May 2014 It is customary for the Department of the Environment and Local Government to raise awareness regarding the need to check the register to coincide with the display period of 1st to 25th November 2013 The Department has arranged for the printing and distribution of posters in Irish and English to local authorities members of the Oireachtas and other relevant organisations and for the placement of an advertisement in the national daily papers drawing attention to the register and the need to check it As the Local and European elections will take place next year the Department is taking a number of additional measures to encourage EU nationals in relation to the European Parliament and Local elections and other Non Irish Nationals in relation to the Local Elections to exercise their right to register and vote in the elections if they are otherwise qualified age 18 and resident in the State The following measures are being taken Multi lingual prompt cards in 17 different languages have been made available to county and city councils so that when house to house enquiries are being made by the authorities register staff they can make a connection with people who do not have any English This facility was also available in advance of previous European and Local elections but an additional 3 languages have been added this time around The Department s Information Leaflet on the Register of Electors has been updated and is being made available in all of the 17 languages matching

    you I welcome you all here today from countries all around the globe We have here at this ceremony almost 1 000 candidates who will shortly become Ireland s newest citizens And I welcome your friends and family who have come today to witness this important milestone in your life It is particularly appropriate that such a significant and memorable event should take place here in the iconic architectural surroundings of the Convention Centre a facility which celebrates all that is good about our country as we emerge from the dark economic days of recent years The decision to apply to become an Irish citizen is one I know that you did not take lightly and today is a major event in your life It is also a major event for us as the host nation in bestowing this honour on you As Minister for Justice and Equality I have the responsibility and duty on behalf of the Irish nation to ensure that the grant of citizenship is given in accordance with the laws of our country Each application is given careful consideration and I take each decision to grant or indeed to refuse citizenship very seriously indeed It is a momentous occasion for you as it is for us It is a life altering event not only for you but for generations yet to come in your families Put it this way if the antecedents of that great Irish American President John Fitzgerald Kennedy who emigrated from this land all those years ago had not in their day become American citizens JFK could not and would not have been elected President of the USA Who knows here among you or among your children or your children s children there may well be a future Taoiseach a President or perhaps even a Minister for Justice who will be up here granting citizenship to new citizens of the Republic of Ireland Today s ceremony is greatly enhanced by the presence of Bryan McMahon a retired Judge of the High Court who will perform the role of Presiding Officer He will administer the Declaration of Fidelity to the Irish Nation and Loyalty to the State which is the final part citizenship application process without which you cannot become an Irish citizen We are therefore very grateful to Bryan for being here today to fulfil this most important function The Army Band under the command of Captain Feargal Carroll is providing the music for today s event which adds immeasurably to the sense of occasion The participation of the Colour Party under the command of Captain Kyran Byrne also underlines the solemnity and importance of the ceremony Thank you all for your presence and your contribution to this event The Staff at the Department of Justice and Equality and particularly those in the Citizenship Section in Tipperary have worked tirelessly both in processing your applications and in making today s event run smoothly On behalf of all of us I thank them also
