tool provided by Google The Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration does not take any responsibility for quality of translation Address by Minister John Curran at the Launch of Cultúr Website 17 11 2009 CHECK AGAINST DILIVERY I would like to start by thanking Sinead Smith the Project Manager with Cultúr for the kind invitation to be here this morning for the opening of Cultúr s new premises and the launch of their website I was very impressed to read about the range of activities which Cultúr has been involved in since its foundation in 2004 Initially the main focus was on music the arts sports and promoting intercultural awareness between the newcomer and host community Cultúr has grown since this time and has expanded the range of services which it offers to include information provision English language classes capacity building anti racism training and feedback into wider policy formulation It continues to grow and respond to difficulties which some migrants face in moving to and adjusting to living in Co Meath We cannot underestimate the challenges which migrants sometimes face when they move to a new community These challenges can be compounded by language difficulties different social norms and ways of interacting with neighbours and work colleagues Things which we take for granted such as registering and making appointments for a doctor or a school can be a source of stress as newcomers may have very different systems in place in their country of origin Often newcomers are unsure of their rights and entitlements and where to go to seek advice about matters which arise Things which we are very familiar with and may take for granted can be very confusing and time consuming to negotiate around for someone who is not familiar with the Irish system Cultúr provides a source of support advice and a means of engaging with local services This is invaluable for migrants who may not have the social networks or knowledge of how to access this information I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to both the staff and the volunteers who work with Cultúr Volunteerism is a key component of the work of Cultúr Like many organisations throughout the country Cultúr was formed by volunteers who made the effort to reach out to newcomers coming to live and work in their community Their contribution continues to be vital to the work of the organisation and I know that English languages classes and interpretation are amongst the services that these volunteers provide I was heartened to see that many of the volunteers are from migrant backgrounds I think that it is very important to acknowledge the importance of the role of migrants themselves in offering support and advice to help other newcomers to integrate I understand that some of these volunteers themselves used the services of Cultúr when they first moved to Co Meath This is active citizenship at its best and clearly shows that these people having benefited from
