5 Leyton Orient 23 10 Preston 5 2 Ryder Cup Golf The US are strong favourites to win at 1 3 and it s hard to see it not happening The days of a Europe rout are long gone Of course Europe could still get a tie in which case they would retain the cup Some bookies offer 10 1 Europe are 3 1 to win it outright It certainly is possible but they need to put themselves into position by winning three of Saturday s foursomes and three of the fourballs just to square the match There is no doubt Americans are clear favourite They have got great team spirit now home support and top players in great form It is hard to see the Samuel Ryder Cup not going to America on Sunday All Ireland Senior Hurling Replay Kilkenny are clear favourites at 1 2 against Galway 11 1 for a draw Galway are 11 5 Paddy Power have an offer Back a winning First Goalscorer in this match and if that same player goes on to score another goal in the match then they ll pay you out at DOUBLE your original odds That s it for this week folks hopefully you ll get something out of it All prices are correct at time of publishing InsideIreland promotes sensible gambling Comments Comments are closed Latest Blog Blog Involvement in elections is a most remarkable wearying voluntary thing yet it is democracy in action With the British General Election over and Dáil by elections on 22nd May this month s blog looks at the experience of someone who has worked in many different roles during election campaigns Ah yes I remember it well My first ever Ryder Cup TV moment Acting Editor of InsideIreland ie Ciarán Hanna writes

a few So I sang the songs which had been used in a beer advert You re just too good to be true and a car advert Music to Watch Girls By Ah there was a vague connection The Concert Hall was packed I seem to recall All enthusiastic all slightly older than me The audience were hugly entertained with all the favourites lively numbers from In the Summertime and That Old Bilbao Moon to the slow arrangements of Moon River and Where Do I Begin the theme from Love Story In the middle of the set he chatted to the audience and talked about his Moon River Theatre and how he was tickled to be in vogue again thanks to a Fiat Punto Commercial which he showed to the audience in the Waterfront If you recall the advert goes that the girl is driving and the fella is looking at all the lovely ladies passing by to the soundtrack of Andy William s Music to Watch Girls By Eventually the lady gets fed up with her fella looking all around him that she pulls up to the kerb beckons a good looking man over and promtly kisses him with her boyfriend appalled beside her looking on Lesson learned When a red convertible pulls up alongside them waiting at traffic lights we see the driver is a fetching young blonde lady promting our fella to turn his head away from the driver of the convertible towards his girlfriend Advert ends We all applaud Andy smiles takes his bow and says Of course if it was me directing this commerical it would have been done like this Then the advert rolled again with exactly the same scenario and the same soundtrack We wondered what was different The girl beckoned the guy over Kissed him again No difference from the first ad The red convertible pulls up alongside the couples car This time the girl looks at the convertible She gets out goes over to the convertible gets in and the car takes off The boyfriend is still in the driver s seat of the other car amazed at what has transpired The convertible drives away with a closeup of the driver a smiling Andy Williams then 77 driving off with the good looking girl in his red convertible That brought the house down He then headed for home with some great numbers Solitaire Born Free and a song I thought was wonderful sang live Home Lovin Man I was hooked He took his bow and walked off Applause He came back Now at 77 his voice was not what it was And he had almost completed his set But he picked two belters as his last two songs First up was the Godfather theme Speak Softly Love which he chose the big ending and he carried it off superbly His last one went down a storm Granted it is one of the most recorded songs of all time but one he

  • Nursing Student Blog: Difficult living on current bursary » Inside Ireland
for the incoming Nursing and Midwifery Students How the cuts add up The total bursary would be cut from 6055 to 5165 per year The uniform and book allowance given in first year 190 will be removed The means tested dependents allowance would raise 5 from 2275 to 2389 for the first child and from 540 to 567 for each subsequent child per annum this is raised a further 5 in 2013 and a further 5 in 2014 These cuts to the bursary means that Nursing and Midwifery students are going to be at even more of a disadvantage as people may be aware Nursing and Midwifery Students are not entailed to any other form of support that other students are entailed to student loans maintenance grants Nursing students in the North are facing cuts to their bursaries Personal experience of difficultly living with current bursary I know first hand as a nursing student how difficult it is to survive on the current bursary We have many hidden costs that people may not be aware of For instance when travelling to placements throughout Northern Ireland we must keep our receipts as proof we then must fill in a complicated form to claim our travel back We can be then be told that our choice of travel wasn t the cheapest option and therefore do not get our travel costs back This leaves us in more debt as we were are told we will get all of our travel costs back from the bursary department This has been something that has annoyed nursing and midwifery students for many years Another concerning issue is with car parking at hospitals during our placements We are made to choose between petrol allowances or car parking charges Though this may sound like it has little significance when the rising price of fuel and the long shifts we work are taken into account we can be hit with costs for example 5 a day for parking This all add ups for the duration of our placements which are six weeks at a time Cuts are Absolutely catastrophic NUS USI President Adrianne Peltz has declared that these cuts are absolutely catastrophic and that the timing of these cuts are disastrous for the incoming students These cuts will further financial difficulties that these students face I can only encourage those incoming nursing and midwifery students to speak out about the disastrous impact that these cuts will have and make their voices heard Thom Hinds is a Year 2 Nursing Student Queen s University Belfast On Friday 21st September the Minister announced that the one off book and uniform allowance worth 190 will now be provided for anyone starting in 2012 Comments Comments are closed Latest Blog Blog Involvement in elections is a most remarkable wearying voluntary thing yet it is democracy in action With the British General Election over and Dáil by elections on 22nd May this month s blog looks at the experience of someone who has

  • No Harrington but significant Irish presence at 39th Ryder Cup » Inside Ireland
Cup The 29 year old won the Volvo World Match Play Championship in May defeating Antrim s Graeme McDowell in the final and collected a further nine top nine finishes through the qualifying campaign The Spanish Captain gave his reasons for picking the Belgian He s had a very solid season and on top of that he s made the extra effort trying to make the team He really showed me that he wants to be a part of that team Those are the reasons for me to pick him He certainly deserved his pick as did Poulter Poulter will be playing in his fourth Ryder Cup after being part of the winning teams twice and has a record of played 11 won eight and lost three The decision by the European Captain was not a surprise I think every one of you pretty much guessed that Ian was going to be there said Olazábal I think he gets the best out of himself playing The Ryder Cup The two times I had the opportunity to share a few moments with him at Valhalla and Celtic Manor you didn t need to motivate him Just by looking at his eyes you could see he would give everything he had during that week The completed team now includes eight of the 12 players who gave Europe that dramatic win 14 ½ 13 ½ at The Celtic Manor Resort in 2012 For the Irish contingent County Down s Rory McIlroy is now the main man Since Celtic Manor the 23 year old has won two major championships and has gained much experience and is a better player for it He lost only one of his four matches last time and could once again provide a formidable partnership with Mc Dowell Mc Dowell 33 the hero of Celtic Manor has had a good season finishing second in the US Open and played in the final group with Adam Scott in Sunday s infamous round at the Open So no Pádraig Harrington for the first time in over a decade in the team He will be missed but he had serious competition for the Wild Card pick when he did not make the team automatically Paul Mc Ginley and Darren Clarke will aid the Captain along with Thomas Bjorn and MA Jimenez meaning there will be four Irishmen at Medinah two playing two non playing The other members of the team are Justin Rose Paul Lawrie Francesco Molinari Luke Donald Lee Westwood Sergio Garcia Peter Hanson Martin Kaymer A strong team indeed It is the first time that the European team has been formed of its 12 leading players in the Official World Ranking with every player inside the world s top 35 Attention will now turn to America to see who American Davis Love III will choose for his four Wild Card Picks with eight already qualified Hunter Mahan Steve Stricker Brandt Snedeker Dustin Johnston Nick Watney and a few others are in

  • The last golf major of 2012 and Ryder Cup points all up for grabs: USPGA Preview » Inside Ireland
eighth the fourteenth and the seventeenth and four par fives There are no bunkers just sandy areas which are not hazards Players are apparantly getting more loft on their clubs to adjust for this change Antrim s Graeme Mc Dowell made interesting points about the Ocean course at Kiawah The golf course has taken a lot of rain but it drains pretty well It is a long course and with the rain it the course will play a lot longer It certainly is changing the dynamic of it It s a links course through the air when it blows here the wind is a massive factor with strength and direction But says the former US Open champion the course doesn t play linksy along the ground The run off areas don t give you a huge amount of option You re either gonna chip them out of play completly or you re gonna probably hit something low along them like a putter Weather The weather is tipped to be a factor at this South Carolina course with winds and even lightening forecast for the first two days Temperatures are very high with the opening day 88 degrees fahrenheit 33 1 celsius the highest of the four days Even Sunday is 86 Showers are likely for most days but particularly on Friday some of them thundery possibly causing delay With humidity high the fourth round could be a slog for the final groups out on the course Groupings and Tee Times Unlike The Open where everyone starts off at the first there are both first and tenth tee starts here at Kiawah Island South Carolina is five hours behind Ireland and all tee times below are in Irish time At twenty past eight in the morning the former champions tee off from the first The Shaun Micheel David Toms and John Daly group are the first of the former champions to play in the event Then at 6 40pm another popular group of former champions tee off Dubliner Pádraig Harrington Phil Mickelson and Davis Love III At half eight from the tenth former winners Martin Kaymer Tiger Woods and defending champion Keegen Bradley try to add another major to their CV Then at 6 30pm Y E Yang Rich Beem and Vijay Singh complete the all champions group Other Irish Ten minutes after the Harrington group Mc Dowell tees off with Scott Piercy and Matt Kuchar At 1pm from the tenth Tyrone s Darren Clarke will tee off and ten minutes later from the same tee box County Down s Rory McIlroy begins his last chance for a major title in 2012 along with Dustin Johnston and Jim Furyk All three men will have stories to talk about letting tournaments go Johnston had a rule infringement which cost him a chance of a playoff for the 2010 USPGA and Furyk blew his chances of a playoff last week at Akron with a last hole collapse Antrim s Michael Hoey is the

  • The End of the Summer Holiday? Opinion Piece » Inside Ireland
know how easy it is to check work emails while on holiday but that runs the risk of getting sucked into completing tasks that arise from them With smartphones netbooks and internet connections everywhere it has become very difficult to really switch off but taking a break and devoting time to rest family and friends is vital to remain healthy Many people who work when they have booked time off end up burning the midnight oil in a usually unsuccessful attempt to get their work done so they can take an active part in the family holiday but this only brings workers ones step closer to burnout and spoils the fun for everyone They may be physically present but their mind is still in the office and this has a highly detrimental impact on family members Reports show that a stressed mind is the perfect breeding ground for further unhealthy anxiety The consequences of not truly taking a break are evident across Britain where stress has become the main cause for long term sickness absence Businesses need to urgently look at ways of increasing efficiency and productivity to save their staff from carrying work over into their personal time if they want staff to remain happy healthy and productive By introducing more flexibility and allowing workers to reduce commute time and work closer to home businesses can become more efficient leaving workers free to really switch off when they are on holiday Olivier de Lavallette is Regional Vice President for Ireland at Regus the world s largest global provider of flexible workspace Comments Comments are closed Latest Blog Blog Involvement in elections is a most remarkable wearying voluntary thing yet it is democracy in action With the British General Election over and Dáil by elections on 22nd May this month
