  • As Saturday’s final marks end of Rugby World Cup 2015, time to review where now for Ireland? » Inside Ireland
ambitious Irish What went wrong The France match ended Ireland s dreams in the Rugby World Cup It was Argentina that sent us packing I hear you cry Indeed it was but the seeds of Ireland s destruction were sewn against France seven days earlier The French game promised to be the seminal game of Ireland s campaign and so it proved The encounter with Les Bleus was so fiercely physical that Joe Schmidt s men simply had nothing left in the tank by the quarter final Such had been the level of attrition inflicted by the French that Ireland were hopelessly ill equipped to cope with the Argentinian onslaught The Pumas blew Ireland away in a superb 15 minute opening salvo and all the favourites could muster in response was passivity and defensive narrowness While it s clear that Schmidt s men should have defended much better it s hard not to attribute Ireland s laxness to their travails against the French Casualty list Also the horrendous casualty list accumulated against France deprived the Irish of the experience needed to dig them out of the hole Jonathan Sexton kicking in Ireland s opening Pool D match against Canada in the Rugby World Cup 2015 at the Millennium Stadium Cardiff Pic Warwick Gastinger via Wikimedia Commons Defeating an excellent Argentina side was always going to be an arduous task Doing this from behind without the calming influences of O Connell and Sexton proved impossible Widening gap between northern and southern hemispheres The other predominant factor in Ireland s inability to progress is the ever widening gap between the northern and southern hemispheres The apparent gulf in quality is affecting every European nation and Ireland are just as vulnerable Schmidt s men have become a Six Nations team For commercial reasons the IRFU invest a considerable amount in Six Nations glory a policy that has been spectacularly successful with Ireland crowned champions these past two seasons This achievement has perhaps lulled the Irish into a false sense of security If this World Cup has proved anything it s that the teams from south of the equator are lightyears ahead in ambition and attacking play Some may question this assertion but an all southern hemisphere semi final line up told its own story While Ireland rely on a heavily structured game plan underpinned by the box kicking of Conor Murray the giants from the southern hemisphere have illuminated this World Cup with their offloading and fluency Ireland Head Coach Joe Schmidt www Inpho ie Schmidt s clever but limited game plan has been enough to edge Ireland to Six Nations glory but has looked inadequate once tested in the business end of the World Cup That is the stark reality What can be done There is no quick fix but the introduction of bonus points into the Six Nations Championship is one way of encouraging attacking rugby We have also seen how regular exposure to the best has profited Argentinian rugby In
