of continuing professional development to today s insurance professional The significance of continuing professional development CPD is increasing across a broad range of professions from engineers to healthcare workers plumbers to lawyers it is recognised as a key ingredient for professional excellence competent work and superior customer service For the insurance industry CPD became more of a box ticking exercise following the introduction of the Central Bank s Minimum Competency Code MCC in 2011 but its importance reaches far beyond compliance Here our Head of Member Services Deirdre Morrissey explains the shift in popularity over the last few years and the importance of keeping CPD relevant for both the professional and the business Deirdre tell us about the trends in CPD you ve been noticing in the last few years As the Head of Member Services CPD provision is one of the major elements of my role Once seen as something of a nuisance in the last two years I ve seen a noticeable change in attitudes Having spoken with members both face to face at events over the phone and by email I ve witnessed first hand that they view CPD as a vital and valuable component of their professional career development Why do you think the reasons are for this shift in attitudes I believe that one factor in this shift for our members is the provision of content across a variety of platforms As well as hosting a comprehensive schedule of face to face lectures in Cork Dublin Galway Limerick and Sligo we have an extremely popular range of e learning modules available to our members In fact 79 of our members availed of online CPD last year and we can only expect that number to grow We also work with some of the larger insurance companies to tailor content to both staff and business requirements Offering in house solutions means the completion of CPD becomes even more seamless and more importantly relevant to their staff business and customers How do you hope to continue to build on these positive advancements The most important thing about CPD is its transferability to the workplace and we work hard to ensure that our topics cover a wide range subjects By gathering member feedback we are able to implement the findings when we review the content or as a trigger to create new streams After our Spring Summer schedule of lectures 82 of respondents in Dublin who attended lectures said that what they learned was transferable to their day to day jobs This was a wonderful success and something we hope to build on for the Autumn Winter season which starts in September We have also implemented member feedback in our e learning offering with a more user friendly interface and improved content I always emphasise how CPD must be continuous so our e learning modules are now rolled out on a regular basis which ensures that our members have access to brand new content throughout the year rather than
