  • ITAS visit Áras an Uachtaráin to mark 20 year Anniversary | Irish Hotels Federation
    October Since 1994 the Irish Tourist Assistance Service has been offering immediate support and assistance to visitors to the country who become victims of crime Tourists who are victims of crime require immediate practical assistance as they have different needs and a different set of challenges to those of residents of the country who become victims of crime Many tourists are left stranded without the means to support themselves and this adds enormously to their difficulties The Chairman of ITAS Mr Martin Holohan said we very much wanted to mark ITAS 20th Anniversary with an event which might adequately show our appreciation to the staff volunteers and long term supporters of ITAS We are delighted to be meeting the President and for the recognition of the critical role which ITAS plays in protecting the reputation of Ireland s tourism offering Since its inception ITAS has dealt with over 7 500 cases of crime incidents which involved assisting almost 13 000 tourists from 50 different countries On average 86 of victimised tourists continued their holiday after ITAS intervention This is an excellent indicator of the positive role the service plays in managing negative experiences The comprehensive service provided by ITAS enables many tourists to continue with their holiday plans This is a tribute to the quality of care provided by the staff and volunteers seven days a week all year round It is also made possible by the close relationship with its key partners An Garda Síochána Foreign Embassies and the goodwill it enjoys from the Tourism Hospitality Industry Ms Lisa Kennedy CEO said ITAS is the only dedicated service in Europe offering specialist assistance to tourist victims of crime We are honoured by the awards that ITAS has gained internationally In 2004 Ann Meade a founding member was awarded an

    Charity Challenge Almost 600 Jurys Inn employees have raised 75 000 for charity having walked run cycled swam golfed and abseiled their way through the Group s 100 mile Charity Challenge Pictured Lenka Kolova Guest Service Staff Reception at Jurys Inn Custom House John Brennan CEO of Jurys Inn and Christine Littlefield Senior Fundraising and Communications Manager Depaul Ireland For the challenge each of the group s 30 hotels and offices decided their own unique plans to cover 100 miles to raise funds for charity Along with walking running cycling and swimming some hotels planned something slightly more quirky such as completing the challenge in fancy dress or pyjamas running on a treadmill in the hotel reception area abseiling kayaking and even bungee jumping Monies raised by the Irish based hotels topped up by 30 000 pledged by Jurys Inn CEO John Brennan will be split between the group s long term charity partner Depaul Ireland and several local Irish charities chosen by employees John Brennan CEO of Jurys Inn said Imagination knows no bounds when it comes to ways in which you can cover 100 miles and I think the enthusiasm of our employees to get creative for their

    to thank all those involved with this unique service staff volunteers and members of the tourism and hospitality industry for their continued support and goodwill towards ITAS Ireland remains one of the safest destinations for tourists and the Gardaí are working hard to ensure that crime against tourists is kept at one of the lowest levels in Europe However when incidents do occur it is vital to look after visitors to our country and to provide them with practical assistance and emotional support for their own good and to ensure that they go home with an overall positive view of Ireland In 20 years ITAS has assisted over 7 500 cases of crime incidents which involved assisting almost 13 000 tourists 2013 saw an increase in the number of tourists seeking assistance from the service the majority of whom had been victims of theft This can range from having handbags stolen to having cars broken into particularly where items were left visible The Chairman of ITAS Mr Martin Holohan said ITAS is the only dedicated service in Europe offering specialist assistance to tourist victims of crime Over the past 20 years 86 of tourists who received assistance from ITAS continued with their holiday plans This is an excellent indicator of the positive role the service plays in managing negative experiences We are very proud of what ITAS has achieved to date ITAS is seen as the benchmark of service delivery which other countries aspire to The Service has been formally acknowledged internationally In 2004 Ann Meade a founding member was awarded an MBE in recognition of the service ITAS provides to British visitors and in 2008 Bernard Lavelle Manager and former volunteer was made a Cavaliere in the Order of The Star of Italian Solidarity by the President of Italy
