  • ACTION NEEDED NOW FOR SHANNON SAY HOTELIERS | Irish Hotels Federation
split must happen sooner rather than later Michael Vaughan the President of the IHF believes that the independence of Shannon from DAA announced in May still holds the potential of marking a new era of opportunity for the region and can act as a significant tourism hub for the West coast of Ireland Mr Vaughan states that tourism businesses on the ground have long supported the need for an independent Shannon airport and the new framework with Shannon Development was supposed to leverage tourism and enterprise interests all working with a single vision for the region but to no avail As a region we are very worried about the dramatic fall in passenger numbers to the airport which has had a detrimental knock on effect to tourism businesses in the area Such a momentous decision was believed to be the catalyst that would energise the region and in particular tourism marketing policies Nothing has materialised It is vitally important that the separation of Shannon Airport from DAA is accelerated as it had been envisaged to ensure that proper promotion of the West of Ireland as a credible holiday destination is put in place ahead of the 2013 season In light

  • IHF QUARTERLY BAROMETER REVEALS DISAPPOINTING RESULTS FOR REGIONAL TOURISM | Irish Hotels Federation
retain the 9 tourism VAT rate which is providing a vital lifeline for many businesses in the sector Nine out of ten 93 hoteliers say the measure will continue to have a positive impact on business into 2013 while 50 say they are likely to take on additional staff over the next year as a direct result Tim Fenn Chief Executive IHF states that despite an actual decline in visitor numbers for the first five months of the year hoteliers had been optimistic for an upturn in business this summer but this has not materialised outside the large cities He says Performance has been patchy at best and we re now expecting business levels to be flat in many parts of the country which is severely disappointing given the very low visitor base we re working off at 30 less than the peak in 2007 Highlighting the tremendous value to be had in hotels throughout the country Mr Fenn says this is only half of the solution He says The other half is getting our marketing message right and giving holidaymakers new reasons to visit Ireland Dublin in particular has had some key successes with venues such as the new conference centre and the O2 making a real impact The challenge for the rest of the country is to ensure we continue to invest in our regional tourism product building on successes such as the Greenway cycleway in Mayo and accelerating the rollout of the Wild Atlantic Way touring route Market Performances Island of Ireland 46 of respondents are seeing an increase in business from the island of Ireland 26 see no change 28 see a decrease Britain 44 of respondents are seeing an increase in business from Britain 37 see no change 19 see a decrease US 44 of

  • IRISH HOTELS FEDERATION SEEKS CLARIFICATION ON STATUTORY SICK PAY SCHEME | Irish Hotels Federation
and employment IHF President Michael Vaughan called on the Government to abandon the proposal and stop sending out mixed messages to businesses at a time when job creation is a national priority What we d like from the Government is a united pro business approach fully aligned with its stated commitment to job creation says Mr Vaughan On the one hand we have supportive tourism initiatives such as a reduced VAT rate while on the other we have moves to impose additional costs on struggling businesses This barrier to job creation would place an unjustifiable burden on small businesses the very businesses that should be the backbone of any future recovery and growth in employment Mr Vaughan cited attempts to resurrect the Joint Labour Committee JLC system as another example of the Government s mixed up approach to job creation He states At a time when many tourism businesses are struggling to survive it is unacceptable that the Government s focus is on restoring an outdated wage setting mechanism that severely undermines the viability of Ireland s tourism industry Hotels and guesthouses many of which are barely surviving are being forced to pay a premium over and above the national

  • HOTELIERS WARN AGAINST ANY MOVE TOWARD MANDATORY CALORIES-ON-MENUS SCHEME | Irish Hotels Federation
President IHF welcomed the voluntary nature of the proposed scheme but expressed concerns that it could be transformed into a mandatory system once the introductory phase has been completed Mr Vaughan warned that the adoption of an indiscriminate one size fits all approach to mandatory calorie labelling would be entirely inappropriate for hotels and guesthouses many of whose menus change on a daily basis reflecting the use of locally sourced produce and the seasonally available ingredients Our members are very concerned that today s announcement could be the first step toward a mandatory system across the board without taking account of the challenges faced by hotels and guesthouses says Mr Vaughan Such a system would be unworkable for many of our members given the prohibitive costs involved in determining calorie content for menus that are constantly changing from day to day Hotels and guesthouses seek to source local seasonal produce and our menus change frequently to reflect this Any given premises could have hundreds of ingredients making up their menu and there simply wouldn t be the resources to calculate in a scientific way the exact calorific value of dishes each day At a time when many hoteliers are struggling
