    competitive market conditions in the hotels sector over the summer season 7 th November 2013 The Irish Hotels Federation states that the CSO consumer price index figures published today reveal a 0 2 rate of inflation in accommodation services including hotel bednights for the twelve months to October 2013 This reflects very competitive market conditions in the hotels sector over the last year See note to editors below The IHF notes that there is excellent value on offer by Irish hotels and guesthouses across the country and that pro tourism measures by the Government over the last two years such as the 9 tourism VAT rate have allowed Ireland to improve its competitiveness when marketing Irish tourism internationally ENDS Note to editor Each month the CSO publishes its national consumer price index Table 14 relates to hotels and restaurants with line 11 2 relating specifically to accommodation services price of bedrooms While the overall inflation in the Restaurants and Hotels category is up 1 8 this includes catering services restaurants cafes licensed premises and canteens and related mainly to increased excise duty in the Budget The accommodation services element showed a fall in prices of 0 2 This relates to

    site Click HERE HOTELIERS WELCOME GREATER CERTAINTY AROUND 9 VAT RATE Back 07 11 2013 HOTELIERS WELCOME GREATER CERTAINTY AROUND 9 VAT RATE Minister Noonan Confirms 9 Tourism VAT Rate Will No longer Be Seen as Temporary 7 th November 2013 The Irish Hotels Federation IHF welcomes the confirmation by Minister Noonan that the 9 tourism VAT rate retained in last month s budget will no longer be seen as temporary and will now be treated like all other tax rates in future budgets Tim Fenn Chief Executive of the IHF says that the reduced VAT rate has been enormously successful in enabling tourism businesses to take on additional staff with 15 200 new jobs being created to date at a very difficult time when employment would otherwise have dropped significantly Today s confirmation by Minister Noonan that the tourism VAT rate will longer be seen as a temporary measure is a much welcome recognition by the Government of the important role tourism plays as a labour intensive industry with enormous potential for job creation The measure will provide us with greater certainty over the coming years and allow us to compete more effectively abroad for holidaymakers This will have

    a positive effect on their business Similarly the reduced PRSI rate for employers was also a helpful initiative for members nationwide with almost 87 of those surveyed indicating that it has had a positive impact on their businesses However the majority 88 of members surveyed indicated that any withdrawal of the tourism VAT rate would result in decreased staffing levels over the next year Mr Tim Fenn Chief Executive Irish Hotels Federation urged that the VAT rate be retained to allow for further growth in the sector The 9 tourism VAT rate initiative allowed tourism businesses to survive and create thousands of additional jobs at the first sign of an early and fragile recovery We re very concerned regarding comments by the Minister in recent days and urge him to consider the net benefit to the Exchequer of such an economic stimulus for our industry which has created vital jobs in towns and villages throughout the country He said The retention of this rate is vital to the stability of the already fragile economic recovery and any attempt to withdraw this support will only serve to reverse the current momentum The IHF noted that a series of pro tourism measures by the Government over the last two years have been important in allowing Ireland to recover some of its competitiveness when marketing Irish tourism internationally Overall confidence levels are up on last year with 71 of respondents indicating a positive outlook for trading conditions for their business over the next twelve months Key Challenges The number of hoteliers concerned about the viability of their business is still high at 63 but the number who are very concerned has reduced from 28 1 October 2012 down to 6 5 Most of the respondents in excess of 90 are concerned that the
