  • Shannon College Student wins Gold Medal for Restaurant Service in World Skills competition | Irish Hotels Federation
    out of 70 countries Alina Sile was chosen to represent Ireland after winning gold in Restaurant Service at the Ireland Skills competition earlier this year guided by her lecturer Mr Andrew Langford In preparation for the World Skills competition Alina spent the summer training under the mentorship of Mr Ray Cullen a service skills expert Alina competed with trainees from all over the world in the Restaurant Service category which had a wide range of test elements including barista service casual dining banquet service liqueur knowledge and fine dining As a hotel management student Alina s degree studies at Shannon College include training across a range of professional areas including restaurant service culinary studies accommodation services food science and front office These professional practical classes are balanced with extensive business studies and international work placements The unique ethos and study environment at Shannon College ensures students develop a high level of professionalism before they graduate According to Mr Andrew Langford Lecturer in Food and Beverage Studies Alina s professionalism was a deciding factor in taking the gold medal Alina s maturity industry experience and dedication to her training all came together on the world stage and it was a combination of all these elements that saw her win the gold medal Alina like all Shannon College students began her restaurant service training during her first year at the college starting with the basics and going on to perfect her technical skills many of which were tested during the competition One such skill was the preparation of the perfect Irish Coffee Ireland has a long history in the hospitality and service industry with Shannon College graduates holding top positions in many of the world s leading hotels World skills highlights the importance of practical skills in industry and Alina s success

    of the Year Grand Final Back 15 09 2015 The Heights Hotel in Killarney Co Kerry has been crowned Ireland s best hotel venue in the sixth annual Great Carvery of the Year competition The winners were unveiled by Irish sporting hero Katie Taylor in front of a packed house at the Great Carvery of the Year Grand Final at the Herbert Park Hotel in Dublin Launched in 2010 by Unilever Food Solutions Ireland Great Carvery of the Year is an all island search for Ireland s best pub and hotel carvery Speaking at the final Business Development Chef at Unilever Food Solutions Mark McCarthy said This year the standard of entry to the competition was incredible Each year the bar gets set higher in what has become a very exciting competition All of the finalists in the competition proved to be of an exceptionally high standard in terms of food quality and service A great carvery meal is about much more than just the quality of the food served it s about atmosphere value and exceptional customer service and that s what the Great Carvery of the Year competition is all about I would like to thank The Heights

    It began in 1958 under the auspices of Bord Failte Eireann and was run by Mr Jimmy Kelly Well known past pupils include Martin Shanahan TV chef and proprietor of Fishy Fishy in Kinsale Cork Eugene McSweeney a well known industry consultant who resides in Kilkenny Ed Cooney Executive Chef at the 5 Merrion Hotel Steven McNally Deputy CEO at the Dalata Hotel Group and President of the Irish Hotels Federation Noel Cunningham Media personality and General Manager at Harvey s Point Paul Carty MD at Diageo and Chair of Irish Tourism Confederation ITIC Two famous waiters include Sean Davoren head Butler at the Savoy hotel in London who also trains the Queens butlers and Michael Lynch who has been in Claridges hotel since 78 and also starred in the BBC production of Inside Claridges in 2012 Mr Pat Cronin who was one of the first students and the last Manager of the Catering School after being at the helm for almost 15 years said Rockwell had a major influence on traditional cooking and service over its 25 year history the hotel and catering industry in Ireland and it s legacy is still lives on as past pupils continue to make a major impact on the National and global Hospitality business It is a sadder place without the Rockwell student This year s get together will be the best yet and we expect in excess of 180 past pupils Everyone is assured of a great night with excellent food exceeding expectations of those working in the industry Former pupils will be travelling from all over Ireland and further afield for the event one chef Padraig Molloy is even coming in from Antarctica The evening which is in aid of local charity will commence with mass at 7pm in the hotel
