    support groups ICTM Ireland encourages excellence in the work of its members From its initial focus on discourse on Irish traditional music the conferences of ICTM Ireland have grown to encompass musical expressions found throughout Ireland and the world thus providing a much needed local forum for the recently burgeoning ethnomusicological research culture on the island The scope of the Society s activities is intended to reflect the interests of all its members including ethnomusicologists folklorists performers music enthusiasts and the traditional music community at large ICTM Ireland is composed of scholars students performers publishers museum specialists and librarians from numerous disciplines Some of these disciplines include anthropology musicology cultural studies acoustics popular music studies music education folklore composition archiving and the performing arts ICTM Ireland undertakes to involve all these professions in its work but anybody with an interest in the scholarly study of music is welcome and encouraged to join The functions of ICTM Ireland include a the holding of conferences and colloquia in Ireland b publications c forming of national sub committees and study groups d issuing of audio visual materials e encouraging national and international archives for all types of music and dance in Ireland including traditional folk popular classical and urban music and dance f facilitating the exchange of information in any form pertaining to all types of music and dance in Ireland including electronic files films recordings and publications g supporting the organisation of festivals of performing arts in Ireland h cooperating with broadcasting organizations Since 2005 ICTM Ireland has held conferences annually Ethnomusicology in the Digital Age Belfast 2013 Movement and Music Dublin 2012 Listening University of Ulster Magee Campus Derry Londonderry 2011 Ensemble Playing Together Mary Immaculate College University of Limerick 2010 Recording and a Tribute to Hugh Shields UCD School of

    at Nottingham he taught at the universities of Birmingham and Sheffield He studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music the Royal Northern College of Music and the universities of Huddersfield and Sheffield He has published articles and reviews in academic journals such as Asian Music Ethnomusicology Forum Hmong Studies Journal and the Journal of American Folklore His main area of research expertise is on the musical cultures of Southeast Asia particularly Vietnam He is currently working on his first monograph an ethnographic study of minority musics in northern Vietnam treasurer ictm ie Michalis Poupazis Education Officer Michalis Poupazis is a PhD student and part time lecturer in Ethnomusicology at University College Cork His doctoral work is in receipt of the Graduate School College of Arts Celtic Studies Social Sciences Excellence Award Ireland and the Leventis Foundation Award Cyprus and his research explores the cultural world of Greek and Turkish speaking Cypriot migrants in Birmingham aiming to make available findings from the diaspora as a resource for improving intercommunal relations in Cyprus Michalis is currently a member of the committee and the Newsletter Editor for the International Association of the Study of Popular Music in the UK and Ireland His previous training has included a BA in Popular Music from Hull University awarded Best Overall Performance in Music and an Arts Humanities Research Council Awarded MA in Ethnomusicology from the University of Durham UK His previous occupations have included night club owner bar manager music producer Dj radio broadcaster and professional basketball player In what he claims as his spare time Michalis loves eating and spending time with his fiancée and his cats speis ictm ie Dr Conor Caldwell Membership Officer Conor Caldwell currently works at Queen s University Belfast where he is a research fellow on the AHRC funded project An Historical Typology of Irish Song The project aims to develop a database of examples of song in Ireland from the earliest examples of medieval chant through to pieces from the modern Irish tradition His Phd supervised by Dr Martin Dowling and awarded in 2013 was on the Donegal fiddle player John Doherty He has published several articles on Doherty and is currently co writing a monograph on Doherty s life and music Conor chairs the interdisciplinary research society New Crops and is currently editing the society s first publication which has been taken on by Peter Lang for print in early 2016 Conor has recently published with Ethnomusicology Ireland and the Journal of the Society for Musicology in Ireland as well as keeping an active research profile through conferences and symposia Away from academia Conor plays with the Belfast traditional music group Craobh Rua with whom he has recently recorded an album I d understand you if I knew what you meant Dr Seán McElwain Communications Officer communication ictm ie 10 Sep ICTM Ireland ICTMIreland A programme of events for the SEM ICTM Joint Forum can be downloaded at the following address irishworldacademy ie semictmforum Expand reply retweet
