  • Sir Horace Plunkett | History | Irish Co-Operative Organisation Society
    to co ops This company has today evolved into the international company known as Aryzta AG 1899 Founding Vice President of the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction for Ireland Can claim to be the oldest department in the Irish Republic having preceded the Irish Government structure 1909 In his last public letter as President of the United States President Theodore Roosevelt gave thanks to Sir Horace Plunkett for his great services to the organisation of agriculture in the United States Roosevelt credits Sir Horace Plunkett with helping formulate agricultural policy in the USA In fact Roosevelt adopted Plunkett s slogan of Better farming better business better living for his conservation and agricultural policy 1914 The co op movement spread throughout Ireland and by 1914 there were over 800 co ops in the country 1919 Started the Plunkett Foundation in Ireland and England The Plunkett Foundation continued to promote and develop agricultural co operatives and rural community enterprise with the slogan Better Farming Better Business Better Living Over the years it too has evolved Its work today focuses on the development of co operatives in the areas of Rural Community Enterprises Community Shops Co operative Pubs and Community Food Enterprises 1924 In in conjunction with the Empire Exhibition at Wembley in north London the Plunkett Foundation organised the first global conference of agricultural co operatives 1932 Sir Horace spent the last years of his life in England and died there in 1932 at the age of 78 My Dear Sir Horace I wish you were an American and either in the Senate or my Cabinet You take an interest in exactly the problems which I regard as vital and you approach them in what seems to me to be the only sane and healthy way Letter from President of the

    and to recommend these policies for acceptance to the Board Chief Executive Officer The Chief Executive Officer CEO is responsible for the day to day management of ICOS and the ICOS team Other responsibilities include the formulation of strategy and policy for submission and approval by the Board of Directors The current CEO of ICOS is Mr Seamus O Donohoe Co op Secretary The Secretary is responsible to the Board for the convening of meeting of the Board keeping minutes of meetings seeing that the Society s Rules are adhered to and looking after the Share Register The Secretary has an obligation to give effect to decisions made by the Board and any General Meeting Co operative Consultancy Services CSS Ltd is the Corporate Secretary of ICOS Auditors The role and responsibilities of the auditor rests in the backdrop of the Board s responsibilities The auditor confirms whether in their opinion the Board s responsibilities have been met and the trading results and the financial position of the Society reported in the financial statements are accurately reflected on a materiality basis ICOS s current auditor is KPMG ICOS AT A GLANCE ICOS member co ops and their associated companies have 150 000 individual members 12 000 employees in Ireland a further 24 000 abroad and combined turnover of 12 billion ICOS has three offices our Head office at Merrion Square in Dublin our Regional office in Cork City and we also have an EU office in Brussels ICOS represents co operatives on over fifty national international and intergovernmental organisations and bodies such as Pobal Teagasc National Dairy Council Irish Dairy Board Dairy Research Trust and COPA COGECA ICOS is governed by a Board of Directors We also have three elected expert sub committees representing our members across the Dairy Livestock

    to the challenges in developing countries IFCD was intended as a channel through which to share the success and experience of Irish co operatives working together in co operatives and to those in developing countries to help themselves in the same way Co op Source ICOS helps facilitate a purchasing group comprising 18 co ops with total purchases of in excess of 23m The Co op Source branded product grouping has a compliment of seven product groupings under its brand these Crop packaging Animal mineral supplements Dairy Detergents Clothing Grass Seeds Milking Machine filter socks Cow teat foam sanitizer The purchasing group s membership extends throughout the country The Group is headquartered in the ICOS office in Cork IMQCS The Irish Milk Quality Co operative IMQCS has been central to promoting milk quality in recent years The website www milkquality ie of the IMQCS is updated twice per year and contains numerous presentations on milk quality including an update on flukicides and detergents In addition the website contains the names addresses and telephone numbers of all milking machine technicians registered with the IMQCS and dairy co operatives Pensions ICOS Ltd is the registered formal administrator for two group industry wide pension schemes the Irish Co operative Societies Pension Scheme and the Dairy Executive Pension Fund covering 35 contributing co operatives In a typical year ICOS pensions department handles in excess of 2 000 phone calls administers about 100 new retirement deaths and answers enquiries from several hundred former members in addition to providing contribution and year end reports for participating co ops It also manages the other professional inputs into the schemes from actuaries investment firms insurers legal advisors and audit services Purpose Vision Who we are Who we represent Core values Our History ICOS at a glance Governance Board
