  • Comer pays tribute to Joe Walsh’s “innate courtesy..and unerring political instinct” : I C M S A : http://icmsa.ie
Mr Comer said that Mr Walsh s undoubted expertise was complemented by a real affection for and commitment to the farming community and the farmers in turn always knew that when represented by the popular Clonakilty man their case was being put with consummate skill and dignity Mr Comer also noted that Mr Walsh s innate courtesy and immaculate manners belied a steely determination and unerring political instinct that was

  • Massive Opportunities for Irish Food Companies in China - ICMSA. : I C M S A : http://icmsa.ie
3 billon people with a growing middle class However to achieve this I believe that Ireland and Irish food companies will have to establish a strong presence on the ground in China as soon as possible in order to maximise the benefit of the market which should then translate into improved returns for Irish farmers in future years At present Mr Comer said that New Zealand is the major supplier of dairy products to the Chinese market and Chinese food companies recognise the need going forward to have a diversified group of suppliers of quality dairy products and it is as a result of this need to diversify that I believe that Irish produce has the opportunity to fill this niche and a number of the announcements this week from the Irish Dairy Board and Kerry confirm the potential of the marketplace and also the need for Irish food companies to further invest in this marketplace which is likely to drive global food prices going forward With in excess of 90 of Irish dairy products exported and with the expected growth in milk production in Ireland we are going to require a broad range of markets to sell our produce

the Chinese authorities of our excellent standards and hopefully develop a strong market for Irish beef in China where demand for beef is expecting to grow strongly over the next five years With the difficulties faced by Irish beef producers over the last year Mr Comer said that it is quite obvious that Irish beef producers need access to as many markets as possible and the Chinese market can present

  • MEPs urged to reject Commission’s ‘stripping’ of CAP funds for top-up of EU Aid and Development commitments : I C M S A : http://icmsa.ie
helping farmers deal with the fall out arising from Russia s import ban and into EU Humanitarian Aid and development commitments John Comer said that while no one was advocating a lessening of EU aid programmes it was desperately unfair to fund such programmes through the simple expedient of stripping monies away from the EU s farmers who are sector most specifically affected by the Russian decision which was itself a reaction to a political decision taken by the EU Mr Comer said that if the Commission s proposal goes through it will have the net effect of double penalising the EU s farmers by allowing the Commission to take a decision with regards to Russia that was always going to impact farming and food production disproportionately and then having set up a fund for emergency aid to those farmers most affected by their decision and the consequent Russian reaction permitting the Commission to dip in to these allocated funds to top up emergency aid and development programmes Mr Comer said that farmers sense of injustice would be compounded by the fact that the recouped CAP funds were mostly comprised of superlevy fines and spending errors and that as such

  • McCormack warns on ‘double-threat’ posed by Superlevy and milk price squeeze : I C M S A : http://icmsa.ie
very challenging cash flow situation comparable to Spring 2013 for the farmers affected by a super levy The projected superlevy could be close to 110m given the current percentage overruns and instead of slowing down September showed a further increase in the projected superlevy figure Farmers need to be very mindful and much more alert to the scale of the potential fine that will come their way The amount of flexi milk will be minuscule and the likelihood is that producers under 350 000 litres will also find themselves very much exposed as all Co ops are either on or well ahead of quota ICMSA prides itself on taking a sober approach to short and medium term analysis but frankly the red lights are flashing very bright right now Mr McCormack also said that the possibility and rumours of a last minute miracle being produced at European level need to be quashed as there are Member States within the European Union not in favour of the elimination of superlevy leaving as the only real option the possibility of a butterfat adjustment which ICMSA continues to lobby for We must treat the final year the same as all of the previous

  • Embrace Farm founder says farm fatalities run risk of increasing as farming intensifies : I C M S A : http://icmsa.ie
s death has left Farming is long since Ireland s most dangerous industry Last year it was responsible for 40pc of workplace deaths with 17 deaths across the year There were 10 deaths at the end of September in 2013 but this year has been even worse with 21 already That s a 110pc increase and you have to fear we are not at the end of it Farming has become much more mechanised over recent decades and that has clearly increased the risk My concern is that as farming intensifies over the coming years it could get worse The ending of quotas for example is going to see a lot of young farmers in particular increasing their herd size That s going to mean more animals more silage to be harvested more machinery on farms and generally more activity That equates to greater risk Introducing the What s left behind campaign Mr Rohan whose father Liam died at the age of 74 two years ago following an accident at the family farm in Shanahoe Co Laois said that the videos featuring four farm families that have suffered great loss will give an insight into the emotional and practical loss associated with farm accidents We are essentially with these videos trying to illustrate as our campaign theme says what s left behind as a result of farm fatalities What s left behind is awful make no mistake about it and its essentially across two strands There s the terrible emotional pain that is so obvious but then there s the huge practical pain that many people don t realise at the time of who picks up the pieces Who farms the farm when the farmer dies We are asking for farmers and their wives children or parents to ensure their
