    the famine in the mid eighties and played a central role in Trócaire s response to the famine in Somalia in the early 1990s establishing its programme in Gedo which still operates today Sally was appointed by the President of Ireland as a member of the High Level Panel for the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad in 2012 and awarded the Hugh O Flaherty Humanitarian Award in 2011 This outspoken champion for the poor guides Trócaire today By Éamonn Meehan Since Trócaire s foundation in 1973 human rights in Central America has been at the core of our work Highlighting the repression of those trying to make a living off the land and the brutality which often claims the lives ordinary people has been the cornerstone of what we do In the 1970s Trócaire was funding many different projects in El Salvador Grants were given to its Commission for Justice and Peace to help its small staff investigate injustices a grant was given to set up a Socorro Juridicio a legal aid office for the Archdiocese of San Salvador funds were provided to relations trying to trace missing family members and to the Association of Women who found themselves alone as main breadwinners with no means to feed their families In 1977 Monsignor Oscar Romero was appointed Archbishop of San Salvador While the General of the country was determined to uphold the privileges of a select few the Archbishop quickly became known as a champion of human rights In a report he issued on 5 March 1977 he noted that the recent election in El Salvador had been followed by a wave of violence which included the killing of peasants and the torture of political dissidents He added The Church cannot do anything less than raise its voice when injustice has overpowered society It cannot remain quiet when human rights are trampled In 1979 we began funding the El Salvador Human Rights Commission which had been founded by the Archbishop in response to the unlawful killing of 8 000 people Archbishop Romero consistently denounced the terrorisation of the people advocating for social and economic reforms He used archdiocesan radio to inform the largely illiterate population of their rights Following the bombing of the station s radio transmitter Bishop Eamon Casey our founding Chairman received a letter from Monsignor Romero dated 1 March 1980 asking for funding to restore the broadcasting unit Not having the radio he wrote deprives us of a means so important here He also said to Bishop Casey I would like once more to thank your kindness and preoccupation for our country and our Church and the kindness of the Irish Bishop s Conference and Trócaire s Trócaire made a grant of 10 950 for the transmitter s replacement Two weeks after writing this letter Archbishop Romero was brutally murdered while saying mass in San Salvador His murder was a reprisal for his unflinching defence of human rights Bishop Casey attended his funeral and

    Family Baroness Nuala O Loan Freedom s Orphans David Quinn The Future of the Family in Ireland Bairbre Cahill The Future of the Family in Ireland Breda O Brien 729 Site Views 1 Feed Views 1 0 1 0 Share this with your friends via What do cuts to the State funding of Accord indicate A Question of Faith May 15 2015 10 29 am In this episode of A Question of Faith we hear about the good work of Accord and a panel discusses the recently announced cut of all State funding for their pre marriage courses ACCORD www Accord ie Accord is an agency of the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference The first Accord centre was founded in Belfast in 1962 Accord aims to promote a deeper understanding of Christian marriage and offers people the means to safeguard and nourish their marriage and family relationships ACCORD operates in 55 centres throughout the island of Ireland North and South and is committed to providing a professional service Tulsa Bishop Denis Nulty President of Accord Catholic marriage care service has confirmed that Tusla the government s child and family agency wrote to Accord on 7 May 2015 to advise that Following confirmation of Tusla s budget for 2015 by Minister Reilly on 27 April a decision has been made to withdraw funding for Marriage Preparation Courses from 2015 onwards The Tusla funding for Accord marriage preparation courses in 2015 would have amounted to 360 000 Statement by Bishop Nulty President of Accord I am very disappointed that Tusla has made this funding decision which will certainly undermine a vital service provided to women and men preparing for marriage The Tusla decision is all the more perplexing as demand for Accord marriage preparation courses has increased year on year over the last five years with over 15 500 men and women participating in 2014 Feedback from those attending our courses has consistently been very positive with participants often describing them as informative and beneficial and providing an important opportunity to share concerns with other soon to be married people concerning the many challenges facing marriage and family life Marriage preparation helps to sustain the celebration of love which is at the core of the life long commitment publicly declared by a woman and man to each other on their wedding day Accord offers quality marriage preparation courses which include modules on family of origin and self awareness communication and conflict commitment and the sacrament of marriage sexuality and intimacy and good parenting In this way marriage preparation also serves the common good The Tusla decision to withdraw its funding is an obvious retrograde step for society and I ask that it be reversed immediately Bishop Nulty concluded On 20 January last I along with a delegation from Accord met with Mr James Reilly TD Minister for Children and Youth Affairs and his senior officials to discuss Accord s key services marriage preparation and marriage and relationship counselling We highlighted the fact that
