  • Next Step - IASE – Irish Association of Supported Employment
    commenced in 2013 to explore and assess inclusive approaches for improving the employability of persons with disabilities or other challenges that makes it difficult for them to obtain and retain employment in the open labour market The main focus of the partnership was to explore best practice conditions and inclusive approaches under the supported employment paradigm which is strongly related to on the job training and follow up supports as opposed to sheltered employment and pre vocational training European research and evaluations have demonstrated that supported employment strong potential and should be further developed and disseminated through all European countries A essential key factor in a further development of supported employment based inclusive approaches is adequate and updated training of VET training providers as well as development of methodologies for on the job support and collaboration with employers In this context the European Union of Supported Employment EUSE has developed quality standards and good practice models for SE However these standards and models have been implemented to varying degrees in various European countries At the same time there are many examples of good practice and models to learn from Over the life time of the Next Step project the partners identified analyze and exchange experiences about contemporary state of the art models in supported employment and related place then train approaches Each partner documented and present one or two examples of good models or best practices in supported employment in their own member states Next Step Partners 1 Work Research Institute Oslo Norway Coordinator 2 Universidad de Salamanca Instituto Universitario de Integración en la Comunidad Salamanca Spain 3 University of Lapland Finland 4 Welsh Centre for Learning Disabilities Institute of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neuroscience School of Medicine Cardiff UK 5 Northern Ireland Union of Supported Employment Belfast UK 6

  • Working A Way - IASE – Irish Association of Supported Employment
    ordinator Dara Calleary and Teresa Mallon IASE Chairperson The Working a Way project a three month research based project came into effect following a recommendation in the IASE Strategic Plan 2005 2010 for the need to establish links with local schools in the area while also raising awareness about Supported Employment Five secondary schools across North Mayo took part in the Working a Way project which set out to assess the attitudes of employers in relation to the employment of people with disabilities The project title Working a Way is an empowering statement It is empowering for the young people directly involved in the project and also empowering for those who have a disability The project title in itself is a demonstration of how young people through their participation and their roles as active members of their communities worked a way towards raising awareness about important social issues such as disability and supported employment It is also an empowering statement for people with disabilities as this project is a way of bringing to the attention of the public the right to employment for all in our community This project will therefore create greater awareness among society in which more people with disabilities will be afforded the chance to be Working a way in a job that they love Students conducted research at a local and national level in assessing the attitudes of employers in relation to the employment of people with disabilities A survey was prepared and distributed to employers all over the country across a range on industry sectors Students also undertook disability awareness training in order to assess their own attitudes regarding disability issues Students also conducted video interviews with members of their own communities to determine the level of knowledge and factual understanding in relation to disability

    as IASE patron IASE Patron Padraig O Ceidigh pictured at the Best Practice Awards 2013 with IASE employment development officer Geraldine Grady One of Ireland s leading entrepreneurs the former chairperson of Aer Arann Padraig O Ceidigh was announced as the new IASE Patron at the association s national Best Practice Awards in City Hall Dublin on December 3 2013 Mr O Ceidigh is a strong community leader and sits on numerous boards both business and cultural He is a former Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year an employer an innovator a mentor and a supporter of the work of the IASE Message from our Patron Dear Member I am both delighted and honoured to join IASE as Patron I have looked at the association s values and aims and I can see they are fully focussed on bringing about real social change in Ireland not only for the benefit of jobseekers and employees with disabilities but for the benefit of the whole Irish business community and our wider society in general We all stand to gain from a more inclusive Ireland and we should work to develop a society within which every structure is woven from a rich tapestry of many different types of people Each of us have different gifts abilities ambitions dreams limitations and obstacles to overcome From my own experience in business I have learned that when we draw on this natural richness and diversity in our community be it our home communities business communities or civic communities we can achieve a new higher level of productivity and creativity And this is when we begin to reach and exceed all of our previous expectations On a practical note I can see that supported employment is a simple system which has been proven to work across
