  • New opportunities to introduce national standards in SE - IASE – Irish Association of Supported Employment
    looking closely at each of the six priorities within the strategy The strategy is entitled IASE 2014 2016 Opportunities for Renewal and Equality The title is apt as the IASE sees this particular time in the Irish social political and economic sphere as presenting many challenges but also many opportunities The challenges of recent times mean that the last few years and surely the immediate years to follow have been a time of unprecedented change reform and review in the way we do things in Irish society As our former chairperson and now vice chairperson of the IASE Teresa Mallon explains There has probably rarely been a more exciting if somewhat challenging time for individuals with disabilities their families the services who support them and the policy makers here in Ireland We have for the first time a comprehensive coordinated national policy position on all aspects of disability based on international best practice which focuses on full equality active citizenship rights and advocacy Alongside this the IASE particularly welcomes the decision earlier this year from Minister of State Kathleen Lynch TD to appoint the National Disability Authority NDA to undertake the completion of a Comprehensive Employment Strategy for People with Disabilities which will be launched in 2014 Minister Kathleen Lynch told us at the launch of our strategy that the IASE vision should sit comfortably within the framework of the Comprehensive Employment Strategy to be published later this year The first priority in Opportunities for Renewal and Equality is to develop best practice standards nationally in the provision of supported employment Right now the IASE subscribes to the European best practice standards promoted by the European Union of Supported Employment of which Ireland is a founding member The IASE will continue to promote these best practice standards available on our

  • IASE launches new three-year strategy - IASE – Irish Association of Supported Employment
    IASE Projects News November 21st 2013 Minister of State Kathleen Lynch joined the IASE on Thursday November 14 to officially launch the association s new three year strategy for 2014 to 2016 The plan Opportunities for Renewal and Equality sets out six main priorities aimed at increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Ireland The plan stresses the importance of promoting the model supported employment which currently assists some 5 000 Irish people at work but which could support many more into jobs according to the IASE One of the six priorities is to raise awareness amongst employers about the supports available to them when it comes to hiring and retaining employees with disabilities Chairperson of the IASE Teresa Mallon explained Communities At a national level we now have a strong coordinated policy focus on full social inclusion for people with disabilities An important part of this is providing the right supports to people with disabilities so they can compete for jobs and have full actives lives in their communities she explained Supported employment is a system of supports which has been tried and tested internationally and proven to work and which is available to Irish jobseekers and employees with disabilities as well as employers and co workers People with disabilities are currently only half as likely to be at work as the rest of the general working age population but we are told by the ESRI the rate of employment amongst people with disabilities could be much higher if the right supports were put in place Minister of State Lynch welcomed the plan She described it as a challenging but achievable three year road map Appropriate support People with disabilities are not looking for special treatment she said They are looking for a fair chance to get or
