    Us News News updates Events Blog Gallery Newsletter Past Patrons Sean Gallagher Home About IASE Governance Patrons Past Patrons Sean Gallagher Past Patron Sean Gallagher Entrepreneur Sean Gallagher named as Patron of Charity during National Supported Employment Week 2010 Sean Gallagher pictured speaking at the Job Shadow Awards at the Department of Education July 2010 RTE s Dragon s Den star entrepreneur and disability advocate Sean Gallagher was unveiled as Patron for IASE to assist with the promotion of equality in employment for people with disability through the concept of supported employment in 2010 Sean Gallagher who himself has a visual impairment took over from outgoing patron of the Irish Association of Supported Employment IASE Senator Feargal Quinn a former employer of people with disabilities Message from our former Patron Dear Member I am both delighted and honoured to join IASE as Patron As someone who has faced many challenges in business and life in particular with a visual impairment I am very aware of the many challenges people with disabilities have to overcome I recognise the role of work for people with disability and the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to society through employment is extremely beneficial I want to encourage employers to consider employing people with disability as they can help create a more diverse workforce which adds greatly to inclusion of people with disabilities in society For all of us the ability to engage in meaningful work is part of building confidence it is no different for people with disability it is also important to assist individuals gain greater independence in their own family IASE is doing great work in raising awareness among employers the general public and encouraging people with disabilities to engage with supported employment organisations or other relevant training services I salute the

    when people praise me for what I and my company have done in this area They always assume that because of this interest I must be a very good person Well that s not the reason I am such an advocate at all frankly my motives have largely been ones of self interest It s true that when Superquinn first started employing people with disabilities many years ago now we did it because we thought vaguely it was the right thing to do But as soon as the first differently abled people started to come to work for us we realised very quickly that whether it was right or not it was certainly very good business First of all because the people we took on turned out to be absolutely super employees in every way eager to excel at their jobs eager at all times to stretch their capabilities and eager to get on well with everyone they worked with Without exception they always proved a joy to have around the place Then we saw the effect their presence in our company had on other people Other colleagues in our company were pleased by their presence and many of them valued the opportunity to get to know at close hand people who were differently abled to themselves Our customers too were very impressed to see these people around and always gave the company top marks for it All in all the presence of these different people in our midst made our company a much better place a more efficient place a happier place to be Their value to the business far outweighed any incidental costs that may have been involved in employing them So always when I talk to my fellow employers of the value of supported employment I don

    Blog Employer Members News Practitioner People with disabilities in Ireland make up 11 per cent of the population and have a spending power of 3 3 billion Why not reach out to these customers their families and friends by marketing your business as fully inclusive accessible and open towards employing people with disabilities Customers show a distinct preference to do business with a company they see as fair and caring with 72 of Irish consumers considering a company s reputation when deciding to buy their products and services Business in the Community Ireland 2013 Diverse workforces help businesses appeal to a wider customer base as they are more representative of the general public However the benefits of implementing a fair social policy go much further with established research showing that a diverse workforce also leads to increased productivity innovation and improved business performance A 2012 research report from Deloitte identified an 80 per cent improvement in business performance in teams when levels of diversity and inclusion were high Introducing diversity in the workplace through supported employment gives a business a reputational edge as it is seen to not only be talking the talk but very much walking the walk when it comes to fair social policies Supported employment empowers people with disabilities to get and keep a job in the local labour market Potential employees are matched to the employer s specific needs by an experienced supported employment professional A supported employment professional can assist in the recruitment training and induction of a new employee into the company They will be there as a point of contact providing on going support to both the employer and employee if needed A range of grants and incentives are available to help support employers to increase the diversity of their workforce by taking
